Has anybody seen this? Started watching this yesterday. It's an 8-part documentary. To be perfectly honest, it doesn't offer any new insights or angles on the case nor does it present any new evidence, but it was good to get a detailed, chronological account of events that took place on that fateful day in the holiday resort in Praia da Luz, Portugal and the Portuguese police's efforts to find Madeleine.
I'm currently up to Episode 4. The first few episodes focus on the actual disappearance of Madeleine McCann and the events leading up to it and after it, and the subsequent search and police investigation. It focuses on the early suspects in the case such as Robert Murat and how they came to the attention of the police.
By Episode 4, the documentary has started to switch its focus to Madeleine McCann's parents - Gerry and Kate - as suspects in the case. What this documentary does highlight once again is that Gerry and Kate's story is full of holes and inconsistencies...
First of all, they said they and their friends were taking turns to check on their kids every 20 minutes during dinner, which meant none of the parents were at the table all at once at a given time which is rather strange. Then changed their story to something else when the police further examined their account. I don't believe these parents went to check on their kids for a moment. They were all too busy enjoying their wine thinking the kids were fine. Why they lied is, of course, up for interpretation... were they involved in covering up Madeleine's abduction/death? Or were they just ashamed about not checking on ther kids while they slept for fear of being portrayed as irresponsible parents? Who knows. It's just weird why they would lie about it.
Jane Tanner, family friend of the McCanns, also claimed to have witnessed an unknown stranger walking off with Madeleine on his shoulder. After Murat became a suspect, she later claimed he was the man who was carrying away Madeleine despite claiming she didn't recognise the man before. It's like they were trying to set him up... did she really see Madeleine or was she making it up? If so, why? Or was it an honest mistake? Something doesn't add up. I get the feeling she knows more than she's letting on.
I won't go into the other details too much as most people already know about them.
- The failure to preserve the crime scene by the McCanns. They claimed the shutter to the window was opened from the outside, but when the police arrived it was shut and the children's room was very messy.
- The British 'cadaver dogs' detecting blood on the sofa and on Madeleine's doll in the McCann apartment and the boot of their rental car.
- The suspicion that Madeleine was accidentally poisoned by them.
All of this is covered in fairly good detail. Looking forward to watching the rest of the documentary later...
Meanwhile, Kate and Gerry McCann have reacted rather negatively to the Netflix documentary and have said: "We did not see – and still do not see – how this programme will help the search for Madeleine and, particularly given there is an active police investigation, it could potentially hinder it. Consequently, our views and preferences are not reflected in the programme." and believe it will only fuel more conspiracy theories about Madeleine's disappearance.
But surely it's their inconsistent account of events that has fuelled the conspiracy theories in the first place? They have to tell the full truth if they want these stories to end.
Strange that they would be against this documentary considering the lengths they've gone to keep Madeleine in the media spotlight and keep the coverage going. I would've thought they would be happy that Madeleine was still being talked about...
