If it was not for the overseas audience, Neighbours could have left our screens in 1992. I think 10 wanted rid of the show but the BBC and 10 came to some sort of agreement, maybe help fund the cost of the show. This has given us 23 more years.
Home And Away could easily have been the longest running Aussie TV show ever if Neighbours was axed. In 1992 H&A was 4 years old. That could still happen, H&A is surging towards 30. If Neighbours is finally axed in a few years I think H&A could soon surpass it as it is very popular in Australia.

The BBC did come to the aid of Neighbours financially in the 1990's and look how Freemantle treated them. It would never have happened if Grundy was still making the show. Reg Grundy's wife Joy (Rosemary Daniels) Chambers said as much. It will be interesting to see which show goes first? At present H & A gets around 7.5K and Neighbours around 2.5k on (a good day) However H & A was getting over a million viewers not so long ago. It no longer wins its slot at 7:pm on 7, usually the news and current affairs on 9 gets well over a million. There is some concern with H & A and the direction the show is going in. The ironic thing is Neighbours has improved so much and is tailored made for an overseas audience, its Coronation Street with nice houses and no ugly people. It is certainly putting Corrie to shame at the moment.

A photo of the original line up of the Robinsons household at number 26 Ramsey Street from 1985 on Channel 7. Happy days.

H&A is highly unwatchable, I cannot stomach it. Every episode there seems to be a psycho, a hit and run or a drug war and too much harsh and bland underscore music. Neighbours is well ahead of H&A and puts H&A to shame. Emmerdale puts H&A to shame as well.

The teens in H&A are the most selfish and angst ridden than I`ve ever seen. What a load of selfish miseries they are. Don`t get their own way? Fine, burn down someones house and/or rob a diner and leave Marilyn for dead. Can`t get the girl/lad they want? Then they`ll throw a strop til they do. And the older adults will hug them and say there there.
