Twenty years ago today Betty celebrated her short-lived retirement at the Rovers, and Bet Lynch made her ill-fated return to the street. Whilst the 2002 was a failure the 2003 return wasn't so bad, just a shame Julie Goodyear never got brought back for future guest stints. Like Mike Baldwin's funeral in 2006 or Betty's funeral in 2012. Today marks 20 years when Bet Lynch left the show off-screen after losing a court case. Bet's final time in Weatherfield itself.

Sean Tully made his first appearance 19 years ago. Just a year to go until his 20th anniversary.

Hope he gets the sack before then. He's a nasty piece of work in real life. Rude to his fans and full of himself.

Hope he gets the sack before then. He's a nasty piece of work in real life. Rude to his fans and full of himself. I don't think that is likely to happen now. We have had many producers since he came into it and none been willing to axe him. It seems certain characters are protected (like Kirk Sutherland) despite lack of contribution and yet characters with potential are axed.

Today marks 27 years when Roy Cropper first appeared. He was only originally intended to be in it for a few episodes.

It will be a few days until Gail's 20th wedding anniversary to Richard Hillman. Wonder what she will do to mark it. No doubt she will be mourning him as she now realises he was right to try and bump off Audrey due to her recent behaviour. Richard would have made sure Stephen doesn't get anything.

Today is 60 years since Jerry Booth first appeared. If Graham Haberfield had not died when he did in 1975, I could have see Jerry staying on for many years. I’ve always felt the writers were working towards developing his friendship with Mavis into a relationship. Two nice gentle souls, but of course had that happened we would almost certainly have not had 20 years of the legend that was Derek Wilton! Jerry could easily still be in the show now, having outlived Len and Ray. Becoming an elder statesman of the Street, would he have survived the 1997 cull though?
