This got the show the highest ever viewing figures of 18 million in January 1994. It seems then that the nation had gone Emmerdale mad.
The plane crash did fling the show into the spotlight but it got about 15 million viewers in 1985 on average. It was 1987-1993 when it got just 9 or 10 million.

When the show waved goodbye to the sleepy farming format it had. And I still miss those good old days.

Corrie, EastEnders, Neighbours and Home And Away have got sillier but they still hold a lot of their original concept, either visually or in storylines. Emmerdale is totally detached from its original concept. Some say Emmerdale Farm ended in 1989 and Emmerdale began. The 4 other aforementioned soaps never went for a radical change in format. Emmerdale went from a farming show to a gangster show.

I don`t recall Emmerdale having as many Woolpack scenes as it does now. As a kid growing up watching this, I never appreciated Amos Brearley as much as I do now watching old episodes. What a terrific character he was. Now with the likes of cackling Chas, it seems so unfair to me. Damn you Stuart Blackburn to hells flames for deciding to have foghorn chashorn as part owner of such an iconic pub as the Woolpack.

30th December 1993 was when Emmerdale became an EastEnders clone.

Remember that still of a silhouette running from the fireball in the field? I'm still wondering if Archie faked his death

When the show waved goodbye to the sleepy farming format it had. And symbolised this fact by landing a plane on a field full of sheep. If only they'd done it a few years earlier, they could have taken out Matt Skilbeck too.

I think ED are missing out on a brilliant storyline of bringing back Archie... He could wander in to the Woolly and not realise where he is but then Eric walks in...
