OFAH is his best ever show. Followed by Frost and Open All Hours.
My least fave is The Royal Bodyguard, how David ever agreed to do that crap is beyond me.

I liked him in A Sharp Intake Of Breath and only Fools... I think Open All Hours came in between those two and didn't really cut the mustard for me... Maybe because he wasn't the main character...
I've never watched Frost or any of his more serious roles as I couldn't scrape together the interest to watch... I honestly believe that Only Fools would still have been a hit even if he hadn't played Del Boy... It was such good writing that captured the mood of the nation at the time...

David Jason went grey quite quickly in the 1980s. In 1980 he was only slightly grey. In 1990 he was almost totally grey. I suppose always dying his hair for Del and Granville sped up his hair going grey. And the pressure of increased fame as he was nowhere near as famous prior to OFAH as he was afterwards.
In 2009 I remember his joke about the Asian cloakroom attendant.

What I didn’t understand is why he and Ronnie agreed to go back in ‘85 and do one more season of Open All Hours. OFAH had taken off by then and Jason was 44 years old, he was convincing nobody that he was a young errand boy anymore.
I know that around the same time he talked about leaving OFAH so my assumption would be that he wanted something else to work on in case he did hang up the camel hair coat? Perhaps we might have seen “Still Open All Hours” premiere 30 years early?

Granville said he was 25 in the 1973 pilot giving a 1947/1948 birthdate. In 1985 Granville was still too old to be an errand boy at 38.
This makes Granville 71 now in 2019 in the Still Open All Hours series. Yet he looks older as David Jason looks his age sadly.
David got quite peeved when Michael Palin and co did Monty Python without him.

Did you watch the tribute show tonight ? No I did not know it was on. Seems a good watch though. I bet David hismelf gets fed up of being typecast as Del Boy when there is so much more to his career.

It’s funny how shows like Porterhouse Blue and A Bit of a Do won him awards almost instantly and then other shows like OFAH and Frost took 9 and 7 years respectively after numerous nominations.

Also OFAh was almost axed after series 1 or 2. It was a repeat of 2 episodes of series 2 that gave it the reprieve.
David Jason's hair did go grey quite rapildy during the 1980s. I have seen pics of him in 1981 and his hair is starting to go snowy, by 1989 his hair was almost totally white. Maybe the increased pressure of fame through OFAH and Open All Hours plus Porterhouse Blue etc made his hair go grey quicker.

"Only Fools and Horses" is what I'll always remember him for. I grew up watching him. Del Boy Trotter is the most iconic British sitcom character in history. No one will beat him. In some ways, that's been a curse to David Jason's career because every role he did after that was compared to Del Boy in some shape or form.
That said, I thought it was a masterstroke on David Jason's part to take on the role of Jack Frost on "A Touch of Frost" because he was a fairly different character to Del Boy and it showed a different side to his acting. I think it showed what a versatile actor he is. Not many actors can do that. A lot of actors stick to one genre and become very one dimensional over time.

The actor Jon Iles who is probably best known for playing Mike Dashwood in The Bill has just called DJ a C U Next Tuesday on Twitter.
This was in reference to seeing the C5 Programme proclaiming him to be a “National Treasure”.
Jon recalled that he had shown interest in a part on the show “Diamond Geezer”
Firstly his agent was told he’d have to audition which is unusual for anyone who has done serious time on a show like The Bill, secondly DJ was given a casting vote and vetoed Jon taking up the role!
Jon feels actors, even ones as famous as DJ should not be involved in casting decisions.

Also David Jason says John Cleese begged and pleaded for a guest role in 1976 so he could work with a very famous actor. Talk about vanity.
I like seeing mid 1980s pics of David Jason with no jet black dye in his hair and to see how grey he was getting by then. I have seen a 1987 pic of David and his hair is rapidly whitening, but his face was still slimmer than in the early 1990s when he really put on some weight.
