When Midsomer Murders first begun it felt like a continuation of Bergerac. John Nettles was great as the action man in Bergerac and when MM begun he was great in the Troy days when Troy was his assistant. John Nettles character Tom Barnaby was "Jim Bergerac in the country". Barnaby was chirpier, chattier and his voice was louder, and he was a bit aggressive, but by the late Scott and Jones days Tom Barnaby was a washed out man who hardly uttered a word. Maybe that is one reason why Nettles felt he had enough.
