Iain MaCleod has been there since January - and, in all honesty, I'm struggling to get any feel for what his vision is for the show.
It really feels like all he is interested in doing is pandering to social media and the loudest fans.
We've had two major stunt events within months of each other - social media tick
Undoubtedly Moira & Cain will get re-united (
pleasing the fandom) - fandom pleasing tick
Robron fans have got everything they wanted (
pleasing the fandom) - award-voting cash-cow tick
It seems likely Zak & Joanie will get re-united (a huge outcry on social media that the show split this pair up) -
Chrissie has become some kind of bog-standard soap bitch for Home Farm - even more bizarre, somehow or other, Robert has emerged as the hard done to hero in this scenario
And he (supposedly) introduced the much missed comedy element - although the whole David / Tracy stuff wasn't funny to me.
I understand he appeared to have some big shoes to fill with Kate Oates being revered as some kind of soap producer goddess by social media (
though her halo has become a little tarnished since she went to Corrie), but, I don't get any "feel" for him as a producer and / or what he is bringing to the show.
I see nothing about the show which says "this is my vision"
I just get the feeling he is, not only afraid of upsetting social media - they've become far too important for collecting soap awards and therefore, must be pandered to - but lacking in any real narrative development or storytelling ability.
At the moment - Emmerdale has stopped being a "soap" - and just become a tv show chasing after the social media demographic to win awards.
Whilst I had my issues with KO as producer - I have to admit, under ImC, I've reached the point where the narrative emptiness of the show or the contrived fanfiction direction of some characters has simply made me lose interest and don't care if / when I miss episodes.
And this, from a viewer who has watched the show since the beginning
Sad times for me
