It's weird to think the likes of Kirk, Sean and Chesney have outlasted older characters such as Ivy Tilsley, Curly Watts and Martin Platt. In another decade they will be in the show longer than Mike Baldwin.

90 years ago today Barbara Knox was born as Barbara Brothwood.
Aged 31 she played Rita Littlewood in 1 episode in December 1964. Returned in January 1972 as Mrs Bates, originally a different character but them she said "Rita Bates" then said she was Rita Littlewood.

I might watch the documentary for her birthday even though I don't watch the show anymore. Apart from Barbara I wonder if anyone now on the production is aware she was originally meant to return as a completely different character in 1972.

And for her funeral storyline, they did a sloppy retcon where Annie owned the Rovers and left it to Betty in 1984 but she kept quiet and never said a word when Bet wanted to buy the pub in 1995.

They could have used that story to bring Bet Lynch back for a final guest stint and tie up some loose ends with her friends, instead it was focused on Phil Collinson's favourite character Stella who never interacted with Betty on-screen. Despite Blackburn's flaws I do like that he brought back Bev Unwin for Deirdre's funeral in 2015 and she made amends with Audrey.

Annie Walker never owned the pub though did she...? She was only ever the tenant landlady... Which means you buy the fixtures and fittings but the building is still owned by the brewery which the tenant pays a rent for... When you end your tenancy the brewery buy back the fixtures and fittings less any depreciation depending or not if you've had any refurbishments... Bet wanted to buy the pub outright meaning the building as well... And that is when the Rovers became a free house... Meaning that Bet wasn't affiliated to Newton and Ridley... So could sell whatever beer she wanted... So it was never Annie's to bequeath to Betty anyway...

Emily said in 2012 that Annie owned the pub but the viewers are not idiots, yet Collinson treated us as if we were and I guess the writers had to do what Phil wanted.
Annie only ever owned the tenancy, not the actual building. I wonder if the brewery offscreen had a final say on it and voided the bequest. But in the 1984 episodes, there was no mention of any will. Billy took over the pub in July 1984, and kept cutting corners so handed the tenancy back to the brewery, and Bet took over the tenancy. 10 years later she wanted to buy the pub with Rita but in the end Rita backed out. Betty knew all about it yet kept quiet.
I wonder if the brewery voided the will, or Betty sent Annie a letter offscreen declining the offer. But a copy of Annie's will was in Betty's belongings so she must have known in 1984, and kept quiet all theses years. It kind of trashed her character as she was quite a loyal lady. Betty allowed Bet to struggle once Alec left in 1992, and allowed her to struggle and give up the pub in 1995.

Pity you and CAEF (or a majority of the Corrie fanbase that have knowledge of the show's history) weren't on the writing team when Betty's storyline was conceived. They couldn't even be bothered giving her an on-screen burial. Again, it was just an excuse to give his friend Michelle Collins the spotlight. Collinson was really eager to make her a Corrie legend around that time and the leading star. It even led to an amusing Stella Week thread over on the Digital Spy Forum.

Stella was just Cindy Beale with a Northern accent.
Yes, Collinson shoehorned Stella into Betty's exit, and had it that Gordon now owned the pub, and in the end, Gordon decided not to take up the bequest now his mother Betty was dead. Stella spoke as if she knew Betty but she arrived just weeks after Betty last appeared.
Like when, at Jack Sugden's funeral, Val Pollard in Emmerdale spoke of Amos and Mr Wilks as if she knew them.
