Yes on Tuesday's episode they filmed a few scenes back in Esholt again after 19 years but what gets me is was this just Ashley's skewed memory and he is seeing something unfamiliar to him, including Chas, Doug and Aaron lookalikes or was he actually seeing the village as it looked in 1979, and the characters how they would have looked if it was 1979 which is the year he thought he was in?
If it was Ashley remembering the village how it looked in 1979 then Emmerdale could be breaking the 4th wall as when they moved to Harewood in 1998 the look of the new "set" was a bit different (to look more Dales like) and the stonework of the houses was rubble instead of the coursed sandstone you get in Esholt. Also the buildings in the Harewood set in the show itself are meant to have stood for 300 years or more by 1998 implying the village always looked like that, a dales village.

No... I don't agree but good thinking CEF...
I think they wanted the village to look imposing... So slightly different to us but totally unrecognisable to Ashley... Like Doug et al...
They could do that within the studio sets... But it would have taken a lot of hard work to do it on the Harewood set... So much easier to use the Esholt village...
I hope you get my drift... I'm slightly inebriated...
