The history is not forgotten in the show, more forgotten by the people at ITV who think the Farm days was sleepy when it actually wasn't.
There are still refs to the old days such as the Verney's and when Knobert was a kid. I think the lack of long term characters is why there are not many refs to the shows history.

Emmerdale pre 1989 was a very different show, it wasn't even on all year round until about 1988. It was the 'Doctors' of its day IMO.
However what doesn't help, and I've said this before, was their obsession with killing off any character related to Jack Sugden. His sister, his brother, 2 wives, his eldest son, step-niece (that he had an affair with!), ex sister-in-law etc etc Decimate a family tree that much and you run out of people who could come back after a few years.

Very true, they really didn't think ahead where the Sugdens are concerned.

Emmerdale is a continuation of Emmerdale Farm for many reasons but yes, I have episodes of Emmerdale Farm in February 1988 and while there was a few youngsters on the farm and modern music being played in some scenes at Nick Bates house, if you compare it to February 1990 you see how much it had revamped in the 2 years inbetween. By Feb 1990 we had the Tates and even more young characters (on top of Nick, Archie and Kathy) such as Zoe, Chris, Michael, Elsa, Mark and Rachel. In Feb 1988 there was just 4 younguns, Nick, Archie, Jackie and Kathy. It is wrong to say Emmerdale Farm and Emmerdale are 2 separate programmes as ITV never commissioned "Emmerdale" in 1989 and never axed Emmerdale Farm. Also the Emmerdale era picked up the Emmerdale Farm baton.

I loved Archie Brooks. I was gutted that he was a victim of the plane crash.

I think they should revisit the plot now, it would be great to have a connection to the history of the show.

Archie is still alive and living with Dodge from Home And Away and Jake Moon from EastEnders pretending they are dead.
