Some may say that prior to 2000 when Phil was demonised after Grant's exit that he was a much nicer character. But I think when you have a good think of it, this was actually not the case.
The Mitchell Brothers were bought in as 2 new tough men who were into dodgy scams and had a reputation for settling arguments with violence. Ne pointless if one was fiery and violent and one was quite nice and placid.
Pre 2000 crime/bad thing list for Phil.
1992. Sleeping with his beloved brother Grant's wife Sharon when she was being given a hard time by Grant.
1993. While Grant was on remand, Phil rekindled his affair with Sharon and actually threw his weight around in Grant's absence as he was lusting over Shazza.
1993. Marrying a Romanian refugee so she can get a UK visa as a marriage of convenience. Phil dates Kathy but later sleeps with Nadia then lies through his teeth to Kathy.
1994. Torching Frank's car lot to help Frank in an insurance scam. A vagrant dying and Phil tries to cover his tracks.
1994. Phil agrees to get involved in a dodgy car scam and gets into a few brawls with Jimmy Coogan.
1994. Nadia returns to try and get Phil back and Phil threatening to break her legs if she ever returns and pays her off.
1995/1996. Starts drinking heavily and begins to abuse and use Kathy after they get married and have Ben. He attacks her a few times and gets into drunken rages.
1996. Gives Barry Evans a hiding over a car that caught fire with Phil inside.
1997. Carries on drinking and sleeping rough. He then has therapy to overcome his drink problem.
1998. Gets involved in a protection racket and uses violence towards enemies.
1999. Plants drugs in the nightclub owned by the DiMarco's as they compete with Phil and Grant. Phil even says they can make a play for Giuseppe's, the DiMarco restaurant.
1999. Phil and Grant plan revenge on several people such as Ian Beale.
1999. Phil gets involved in a dodgy scam with Milligan and Frater who dont keep their side of the bargain. Phil threatens them.
1999. Phil kicks the hell out of a gangster on top of a car park.
Conclusion is, Phil was just made a bit nastier in 2000 to what he was before 2000.
