H&A had been running in Australia for over a year by the time it first aired in the UK in Feb 1989 but the premiere of the show in the UK doesn't really count as the birthday.
17th January 2018 is H&A's 30th birthday. From what I read the show will be focused on the Morgans/Astoni's.

30 years wow. What an achievement and still most nights in the top 10 shows in Australia. I remember it starting in the Central Region on a Sunday afternoon with a feature length episode. Tom and the original Pippa (Vanessa Dowling my favourite Pippa.) Strange it wasn't a hit in Oz straight away.

It took me years to get used to the Pippa V2. Vanessa Dowling was always my fave Pippa. It would be amazing if she came back next year.

For a long time her name was mud and any flashbacks had to be from the Debra Lawrence era but I noticed more recently things have softened and some memories from Sally have been allowed to include Vanessa.
The problem is the show really took off and these people originally signed up for a few episodes and probably had other commitments in mind.
I'm also told that Vanessa wasn't first choice for Pippa but they looked at another woman who was married to some big TV person but she wanted a part time role that suited her!

I wonder what Vanessa had done if her name was mud? was it because she left the role as the show was starting to be a success? or had she done something wrong? Interesting? Would love to know? if it was that she left the show to pursue other projects, thats fair enough, that's soap opera life, actors come and go, she did over 2 years on the show i think and if the exec's didn't like it, tough really.

Carol Willesse was originally signed to play Pippa and even was costumed up for filming and begun but then quit so they got Ness to take the role. Jackie Woodburne applied for the role twice but lost out.
For 2018 I want Robert Forza (Rocco from Neighbours) to be in H&A.
I tweeted to Louise Bowes (script editor) that Peter O'Brien would be a great casting for H&A. She may not be to do with casting but I would not know the casting team if they fell in my soup.

I think there's a lot of Pippa in Susan Kennedy, just they made the Kennedys more middle class than the Fletcher/Ross clan.

Tom Fletcher was a bit handy with his fists at times and did not suffer fools gladly. His time in the show was relatively brief, just 2 years. Shame as he was better than Michael. I always saw Alf as the Max Ramsay of H&A and Tom the Jim Robinson. Originally Don Fisher was a bit of a JR type figure, like Paul Robinson in Neighbours but Don soon mellowed.

Even now I struggle with the idea that Don slept with Morag to create the illegitimate Bobby!

The writers must have been smoking something that morning before they went to the studios and thought up that storyline. Don hated Bobby only to then find he was her secret father.

Don liked the Stewart girls; sleeping with Morag, marrying Barbara and even hanging around with boring Celia!

Don even did occasionally show feelings for fishwife Colleen.

Don even did occasionally show feelings for fishwife Colleen. Who later turned out to be a Stewart lovechild!

1989-1996 was when H&A was one of the most watched shows on TV in the UK. May not have been as successful as ITV wanted it to be but it was very huge and well talked about in public. As it was a new thing it may have got more public reaction than the already established Corrie and EE for a while.
