Well dunno what you think but I think it craps all over the history of the show.
Alf got a letter from his "dead" wife Martha around the time he married Ailsa, so 1988. The show began at the start of 1988 so Alf must have found out during 1988. Alf said to Roo that he found out during the time that Roo was angry at the world and angry at Ailsa. Yet he acted like nothing happened. Also when he found his first wife was alive, he did nothing about it and let his marriage to Ailsa continue. Alf let Roo think her mother was dead all these years. Alf robbed Roo of years with her mother, and Roo's baby Martha Jnr (Named after Martha Snr) grew up never known her gran. I know Roo gave baby Martha up for adoption but Martha returned in 2005 as a teenager. It has totally destroyed the integrity of Alf, and made him out to be a huge liar who allows his daughter to suffer like this and not tell her the truth.

I despise these retcons. They play long time H&A fans for fools. Think how different a teenage Roo would`ve been had she had her Mother around. Alf had a lot on his plate with Roo. He spoilt her rotten. And we know why. I don`t suppose Ray Meager is none too happy about this storyline either. And I can`t say I blame him one bit if he was.

Alf’s first wife died, and if she had simply ran off the other characters would have known and I can’t see the likes of Celia and Donald backing up a lie.....

Although now we know she did not die at all, she faked her death in 1985 and is still out there. I think Alf originally thought she was dead but then got the letter and did not bother to tell his daughter. It totally rewrites the shows history.
