While Neighbours got a combined figure of up to 20 million at times, it usually got about 16-17 million. But there are 2 things to remember, and James Oram's 1988 book pointed this out. The 16-17 million was a combined total gained from the afternoon and evening showing. About 10 million in the evening, and about 8 million in the afternoon. Whereas Corrie and EE often got 17 million for a single episode, and the omnibus got up to 20 million. The 2nd thing to remember is some people watched both showings of the same Neighbours episode as well. They said they watched it in the afternoon and then the evening repeat. So I am not sure Neighbours was ever a true threat to Corrie and EE.

Interesting thread A question I have, is was the Christmas day episode of EE in 1986, a combined audience figure of 30 million or was that for the single episode?

I think it was a combined figure. About 20 million watched the episode, and about 10 million watched the omnibus edition. And take into account the amount who watched the omnibus as well as the episode. Emmerdale once got 18 million in one go for the plane crash episodes, which was higher than any single figure for Neighbours or H&A.

Yes the 30 million is a much misquoted figure much to the annoyance of itv and Coronation St.

What is the single biggest rating for a episode in soap? I`m guessing it was the first Deidre/Ken/Mike triangle in the mid 80`s when Deidre told Ken she and Mike were having an affair. .
