ITV know that their Golden Goose is Corrie. Corrie gets all the accolades and awards and iconic status that no other soap can even get close to. Corrie once got 28 million viewers (combined) for Alan Bradley's arrest in 1989 I think.
Emmerdale is always treated as the poor relation, and does not get even a quarter of the hype that Corrie gets. Well in the 1970s to the 1990s, 15 million viewers was seen as a huge achievement for Emmerdale, yet 21 million was seen as average for Corrie.
I can understand this to a big degree as Emmerdale has never achieved the ratings, the national status and the iconic legacy that Corrie has left. Everyone knows who Hilda Ogden is. If you said Annie Sugden in general public conversation, many would say "Who was she?".

I think Annie Sugden (Emmerdale) and Helen Daniels (Neighbours) are equally as iconic in the UK. Yes they are not as iconic as Hilda Ogden or Dot Cotton but still very iconic.
