He bought in Laurie Bates, Trevor Short, Julie Cooper, Marge Green, Paul Priestley and Vince Johnson. All were axed by Fergie (Michael Ferguson) and left in early 1990.
Yes, behind the scenes was a massive change as the shows creators left to do other projects, and set designer Keith Harris left. It was said that the writers struggled without their guidance, so all rallied together. We still had Gerry Huxham and other experienced writers.

I think it’s very telling that all his character introductions were all written out. I’m struggling to think of another producer who suffered this ignominy.

If I was EP, I would wrap up this 33 year old mystery once and for all about Simon Wicks paternity. There were actually indeed 5 suspects. I would not rule out Frank. It was either Frank, Kenny, Pete, Den or Brian. Pat said she thought it was Brian, but I an not convinced she was certain herself. She had previously stated that year that Brian was not the father. Pat did seem to lie a lot. She was shagging all 5 men around the same time so I very much doubt she was ever certain herself. I would love for it to have been Kenny, thus making Simon Ian's cousin, and that Ian was still related to Steven Beale after all, just his cousin's son.

You can feel the winds of change in Albert Square. Colin has gone and Guido just looks like he doesn’t want to be there anymore. I’m kinda bemused as to why he’s living at the flat, he has a place and he was giving his ex time to move out but that was 2 months back!
Frank is getting itchy feet, he loves cars and misses the thrill of flogging them and isn’t enjoying playing Mein Host, mainly because people keep comparing him to Den and that’s unfair.
Sue has been very invisible of late and it was becoming noticeable, in real life Sandy was tackling a heroin addiction that was costing her half her wages each month and will soon leave to concentrate on getting well, it is therefore really ironic that her character is giving Donna such a hard time.

I would love to see the cut scene of Den falling into the canal. Others have said that the scene was of him falling into the canal, then his dead corpse bobbing to the top of the river with eyes wide open and blood pouring out of his mouth.

I’m not sure its ever been broadcast, haven’t found it online as yet.
Today’s episode has us meeting Janine properly. She made a fleeting appearance at the wedding but prior to that neither her nor Clare were mentioned much, in fact I’m wondering if Janine was a retcon.

The lid on the early years was finally slammed shut when Ali Osman left in 1989. The last of one of the original families outside the Beales/Fowlers. The Osmans, Den and Angie Watts, The Carpenters and Jafferys.
1990 was quite a duff year IMHO. The show was still in early stages of recovery from the exodus of 1988-1989. Even Ethel and Dr Legg went part time, and barley appeared at all after 1989.

I've been binge watching 1986 episodes am am up to the Venice/Orient Express eps, I know that Angie has problems and that she was wrong to lie about having cancer, but she still is someone i'd like to live with if i could she's still a good person

I Can see why though, look at Adam Woodyat and Ray Meagher from H&A both there from day dot and still there today, both are typecast as Ian Beale and Alf Stewart respectively at least Anita can still get hired for theatre etc because she left before she was typecast

Leslie Grantham said he never planned on playing Den for 25 years or so. In 1987 he wanted to leave so filmed about 90 episodes in 2 or 3 months so that Den would stay on screen for many months after Leslie left.
Leslie did Fort Boyard after EE and many other TV shows.

One of the best legend characters that perfected the art of coming and going was Morag in Home and Away played by the late great Cornelia Frances. A member of one of the founding families of the show itself, she was able to come in, do a stint and then go off for a year or two but still be remembered by the others.
Watching Classic EastEnders now and seeing Sharon suffer with the death of Den (or so we thought at the time) and the fallout of the Michelle/Den/Vicki storyline it seems almost cruel that Anita wouldn’t reprise Angie for guest stints. A girl needs her mum. Having Sharon be pally with Mancunian Julie the hair stylist is a nice little dig because Anita’s next role was to play a hairstylist in Granada-land.

Instead they had Sharon jet off to America every so often to see Angie, whereas it would have been a nice touch for Angie to return and sort Grant out when he abused Sharon. Angie would have seen photos of Sharon's husband Grant and Sharon would have filled her in on grant, seeing as he was Angie's son in law. When Grant and Sharon signed for divorce at the end of 1994, Sharon went to see her mum in America then returned briefly in mid 1995 before moving away for the next 6 years.
Odd that Angie never jetted back to the UK to attend Sharon's wedding to Grant in 1991.

Well I for one was cringing for the Pride episode and although it had it's moment of cringe it was also very good. It was lovely to see the Taylor's all rally round for Bernie and even Ted accepting her sexuality in a nice way. Tina's words of wisdom to Bernie were just what she needed to take her to where she ended up tonight, right in the middle and thoroughly enjoying herself. Loved Gray giving it big licks.
Stuart's kind of reversed back to type but in fairness he did it thinking that what Callum told him was true and it probably is. He does love Whitney but............. there's a monkey on his shoulder telling him something different. I know there's scenes to come up with out spoiling things where one of his old army mates dies and he goes to the funeral and I think that could well play into this storyline. Ben has come back a confident and cheeky sod and doesn't care who he hurts so some might think he deserved his thumping tonight but I didn't. Nobody deserves violence inflicted on them because of their sexuality. He has been nasty and thoughtless to quite a number of people but he still didn't need that. Nicely played out though between the festivities of Pride.
So Stacey stole the money, strike me down! I think we all saw that coming. I hope she leaves sooner rather than later as she is starting to do my head in and I normally like her. Oops, wrong thread.
