Watch an ep from February 1988 and February 1998 - 10 years later you will be forgiven for thinking it is 2 different shows set in a Yorkshire village with a few of the same actors in it. In Feb 1988 it was about the farm, Sugdens and Amos and Henry. In Feb 1998, the farm had gone, Annie, Amos and Henry had gone, the farming element had gone and it was about the rowdy Dingles and their crime waves.
Emmerdale in Feb 1988 - when it was Emmerdale Farm.
The original farmhouse was present, and Jackie and Kathy marrying that month secured the heirs to the farm and its future. We had Amos and Henry at The Woolpack. The show had plenty of farming scenes as well as some drama such as the drunkard Jock, and Alan Turner and Joe Sugden trying to buy Home Farm. Turner was abrasive but cheery and jokey at the same time. We had everyday Yorkshiremen like Amos and Henry at The Woolpack, and Seth Armstrong and Jack Sugden.
Emmerdale in Feb 1998 - Whatever happened?
The rowdy obnoxious Dingles were centre stage. The farming element had gone. The original farmhouse had been written out, and Jackie had been killed off. No Annie, Amos or Henry. Turner was the miserable Woolpack landlord and was no longer jokey. Jack Sugden had become a self centred passive aggressive man. Seth was a lesser character.

CAEF....why do all the producers since 1998 onwards thinks the more Dingles the better? Village life was so much better without them. I like Lisa, and Chas - and I don't mind Zak in small does. He'd be better as a background character IMO. But the rest can all sod off - including their various partners. Although I do have to admit that I`m warming towards Lydiot somewhat. I`m so weary of the Dingles committing crimes and getting away with it - Cain being the biggest culprit.
