SOAP RATINGS W/E 22nd January 2023 (BARB) EastEnders 16.01.23-3.76m (19.2%) 18.01.23-3.79m (20.2%) 19.01.23-3.70m (18.8%) 20.01.23-3.60m (19.6%) Average:3.71m (19.4%) Coronation Street 16.01.23-5.43m (29.2%) 18.01.23-5.20m (28.0%) 20.01.23-5.24m (28.5%) Average:5.29m (28.5%) Emmerdale 16.01.23-4.78m (26.8%) 17.01.23-4.59m (28.8) 18.01.23-4.40m (25.8%) 19.01.23-4.68m (25.7%) 20.01.23-4.50m (27.5%) Average:4.59m (26.9%) Reverting to form now, the gaps between the big 3 look about right. The figures for EastEnders are decent and the only soap up year on year, but the shares are disappointing. The Christmas and New Year bounce has ended after EastEnders was the most watched soap over the festive period. Staggering Coronation Street is still getting over 5 million an episode in it's current sate. Emmerdale had the biggest drop year on year, but this time last year we were in the middle of the Meena storyline. Not sure if the ratings include streaming as EastEnders tends to be higher when adding other devices where as Emmerdale and Coronation Street get more linear viewers live. Of course ratings don't indicate how good the quality of a show is which is lucky for Corrie. Although I am thoroughly enjoying it right now.

EE should be streets ahead of boring CS for total quality. I think many people watch it on the iPlayer these days. I can't talk about Emmerdale though.

I am finding Corrie a total bore and has deviated a lot from its origins, too many drug wars, kidnappings and race wars and stabbings. At least the shooting of Ernie Bishop was at a time when such drama in the show was the exception.

Crossroads was Corrie's biggest rival before EastEnders and Neighbours came along. Even now, Xroads gets talked about and promoted more than Emmerdale ever has or did. Everyone remembers Shughie, Benny and Meg more than Annie, Amos or Seth. I say Emmerdale, Home And Away and Hollyoaks have always been "lesser" soaps, sitting in the shadows of CS, Xroads, EE, Neighbours and Brookside. While Brookie did not get high ratings, it made up for it with huge iconic status and characters. Trevor Jordache is as iconic as Shughie McPhee or Lou Beale.

Corrie and EastEnders are trading off their heritage, (which is lucky for Corrie as it has nothing much going for it right now) where as Emmerdale (Farm) shit all over theirs and are now just trading on the show "Emmerdale" lucky for them the show is in quite good health and in better condition than Corrie. EastEnders is in the best health out of the big 3 in terms of quality and content, but sadly may have come to late to reap the benefits ratings wise being the top soap, it will remain the 3rd soap, as many viewers have left due to the decline over the past 10 years and won't come back. ITV need to take note at the mistakes the BBC made over EastEnders, as it could repeat itself with Corrie.

Interesting in the latest Thinkbox ratings week ending 14 May, Home and Away on C5 shown at 1:45 in the afternoon is rating higher than Hollyoaks on C4 at 6:30 in the evening. Home and Away's highest rating of the week: 406K. 12.3% at 27 in Channel 5's top 50. Hollyoaks does not make C4's top 50 shows so do not know the rating. At number 50 in C4's rating is Help we bought a village with 297K, 5.5%. The highest rating for the soap was on E4 at 7 in the evening with 322K, 4.1%. How long can C4 justify Hollyoaks on the main channel? www.thinkbox.tv/research/barb-d ... g=Channel5

Slightly off topic but related.
STV are reporting figures of 11.6 million for Brookside online across the month of April.

People are clamouring for a Brookside revival. Too late sadly, it would be a mistake to bring it back, plus soap is a slowly dying genre.
