When it begun in 1972 they used Arncliffe as the village scenes and Lindley Farm as the "Emmerdale Farm" scenes. In late 1975, TPTB decided to use a village closer to the Yorkshire studios in Leeds so Esholt was chosen, and filming begun soon after, with the first scenes airing in January 1976. As Arncliffe and Esholt look very different, a storyline was written in the shows narrative where the old Woolpack suffered with subsidence and they moved to new premises in another part of the village.
I still refer to Arncliffe days of the village as "The Arncliffe end of the village" with the old Woolpack overlooking the village green. TBH I find Arncliffe was more picturesque than Esholt and the first Woolpack was better. When they built the Harewood set they recaptured the picturesque look which was last seen in Arncliffe days.
"The Arncliffe end of the village" was never seen again once filming moved to Esholt for the village scenes. However, I seem to get the idea that in Esholt days, some of the buildings in the village were meant to be the same as Arncliffe days. In Arncliffe days 1972-1976, the vicarage was outside the village on its own in a wooded area, but in 1983 it was next to the church in a built up village street near a lychgate, and was said to be the same building as Rev Ruskin said he lived in this vicarage 10 years earlier.
