The numbers annoy me. The participants aren’t 63, they will be turning 63 next year, some of them weren’t even 62 when they were filmed!
However it is very fascinating, they selected 20 schoolchildren and decided to try and track their lives, now for the first few years it’s not hard, kids live at home and go to school, but once we turn 18 and go out into the big wide world it must be a logistical nightmare to keep in touch with everyone. I think the producers have been lucky that most of the participants chose to continue the project for so many years, this is the first time they’ve had a bereavement which is sad but also good that all of them lived as long as they have done.
There is one huge irony. Charles pulled out of the project many years ago and even tried to sue the producer for keeping footage of him in the show. Charles is a documentary maker himself.....

I have yet to watch this episode but I have watched this series since the start and never missed one. I am slightly younger than Michael Apted, the producer/director. It is filmed every 7 years and they were 7 years old when it started or thereabouts, give or a take a few months so the first one was 7UP , like the drink, LOL. . So this must be the 9th series.
I am not bothered about exact numbers . It is an achievement in itself that the same director is still with us ( and me ! ), still working and and has done every series every 7 years .

I think most of them were born in 1957 not 1956. They were 7 in 1964 and said to be 14 in 1970, when they should have been 13.

I think Apted is feeling his mortality. He’s been quoted in some articles suggesting it might be the last which is a shame because “7 on....70” has such a good ring to it but we have to be mindful that he will be 84/85 by then. Apted was a student researcher for the original, helping to select the kids, the first interviewer sadly died in 2015 and he was 80+

I can’t find any reference to a first interviewer anywhere on the internet. As far as I know, having seen the first one in 1964 it was he who presented it/them. Can you enlighten me, roverman because the first episode is as vivid to me now as it was then .......or my memory is failing me.

Paul Almond directed the first one with Douglas Keay narrating, from 7 plus 7 onwards, Apted has been in charge of the lot.
