Interesting just seen the same article in the Mirror. It would not surprise me, would Channel 5 come to the shows rescue? Doubtful as the show is not as popular as Neighbours in the UK.

H&A has never been the bigwig that Neighbours has been in the UK. It always did sit in Neighbours shadow. In 1990, Neighbours got about 20 million whereas H&A got a mere 13 million on average. Neighbours cast flew to the UK and performed in front of the Queen. H&A never reached those heights.
I also doubt Ch5 will rescue H&A as Neighbours is the favoured soap on there.

According to the yahoo.com article below, Ch7 aren't thinking of axing H&A all together, but rather are 'considering' either moving it to a different/later timeslot or alternatively showing "five episodes of Home and Away airing on Friday nights on the network’s streaming platform 7PLUS, before being broadcast the following week on 7TWO." There has been regular talk of them considering changing H&A's timeslot or moving it to digital channel 7TWO over the last few years. In recent weeks, when there has been AFL (Aussie Rules) games on a couple of Thursday nights, Ch7 has moved H&A to 7TWO in the AFL states (Victoria etc) on the Thursday at 7pm (& then replayed it on the main Ch7 channel later that night). So maybe there is some truth to it this time. We will see...
