Lots of contenders. Some say 1976 but I feel 1976 was a tad overrated. Minnie Caldwell left. It was when Stan became a different character (impaired speech, a lesser role) due to the actor suffering a stroke. Stan was one of the main characters up to then. 1976 did see the arrival of the Cockney spiv Baldwin.
If I had to go for one year alone, best ever I would say 1964. Ogdens arrival, Emily's non wedding to Swindley, Stan vs Ian in wrestling, even Martha's sad death was a good episode.
What do you think is the single best ever year for Corrie?

I'm with you CAEF. 1964 was a great year- and not just coz I was born that year. Great writing, brilliant characters. Unlike the shambles in 2019.

1964 was certainly a pivotal year, 3 producers in 1 year might seem disruptive nowadays but in those early days they seemed to chop and change quite frequently. What Tim Aspinall did was he altered the status quo and 2 of his planned changes ultimately impacted the direction of the Street for the next 20+ years.
He did actually write out Ken and Val, a young childless couple emigrating to Australia. This was overturned by the next producer but had it happened there would have been no twins; Peter and Susan, etc etc
There would have potentially been no subsequent marriages to Janet and Deirdre, no feud with Mike, no Denise and no Daniel.
He introduced the Ogdens and that was just as instrumental, especially as his successor brought back David Barlow and married him off to Irma.
It was also the last year of increasing viewing figures for almost 3 years and the show by 1967 was in danger of being axed.

1964 was also the end of the "really early" years of the show. Martha Longhurst died, Frank Barlow left, the Hewitts (bar Lucille) left, and the Ogdens arrival. 1965 culminated the exodus as Florrie and Mr Swindley left that year.

Hard to say, as I can only remember the early years through DVD. The early years were very good.
In recent times I would have to say I enjoyed Coronation Street under Phil Collinson and liked 2010.

When the Ogdens arrived, Stan was the Les Battersby of the day, he was quite rough and ready and was a boozer. Stan did not suffer fools gladly, and even when he mellowed, he still was ready to smack Ray Langton's ass all over the street in 1971 when he held him in a van and left him on a moor. Stan later held Ray captive I think and had to be restrained.
