They were originally just extras but in 1983 they were elevated to main character status. They were in many ways copies of the Ogdens. Jack was as workshy and lazy as Stan was. Vera was a nagging bint. In late 1984, Jack was browbeated by Vera into taking on Stan Ogden's window cleaning round and that is where Jack met Dulcie Froggatt, again mirroring the "19 Inkerman Street" storyline.
Stan Ogden was a lazy bastard, and Jack was just as much of a lazy bastard.

Initially I thought Jack and Vera were a poor version of the wonderful and brilliant Stan and Hilda. When they bedded into the show they did become a classic couple in their own right.

Even the Ogdens took time to bed in, as they were quite rough to start with.
I suppose Jack and Vera were bought in so soon, even when Stan was still around and they were just seen as the new Ogdens.
