Jack Sugden. He bore a strong facial resemblance to the first Jack but a different personality. The original Jack was abit posh and poncy whereas the 2nd Jack was more Yorkshire and down to earth.
Tom Merrick, the 2nd actor to play him, Edward Peel. 1980-1982. Recast again in 1984 to lookalike actor Jack Carr.

It is hard to imagine Hornby’s Sugden sitting down reading a book, let alone writing one, whereas Burt’s interpretation of the character was more three-dimensional.
It wasn’t brought up much but you get the feeling that Jacob Sugden’s alcoholism was more than just financially damaging to the farm, it mentally upset Jack and he went away and his writing was his escape. Annie briefly mentions the hurt it caused her when she’s helping Kathy realise her marriage to Chris Tate isn’t working anymore.
What used to universally frustrate me with Jack was his blind refusal that you could make a living from ways other than traditional farming. He didn’t like the way NY Estates worked, he didn’t like anything Frank Tate did, he didn’t like Joe working for Kim, he didn’t like Farm shops or weekend accommodation. Yet never came up with his own suggestions to make money!
