So, the new Star Wars movie is out. Apparently the reviews aren't very kind. It's received a 57% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is the second lowest-rated Star Wars movie in history.
I watched a little clip of it. I won't spoil anything, but there's a ridiculous "twist" with the main villain that comes out of nowhere at the start of the movie that, for me, was too much of a stretch even for Star Wars. They don't even bother to explain it properly! I'm not sure what the writers were thinking... but it is bad writing from the director JJ Abrams. He has ruined the Star Wars canon for me. It's worse than killing off Luke Skywalker IMO.
Additionally, the much-debated identity of Rey's biological family is finally revealed to fans, which is another ridiculous twist that feels so contrived and stupid when you think about it. It sounds cool on paper, but it just doesn't work. I'm glad she didn't turn out to be another long-lost Skywalker, but this twist feels like it was pulled out of a hat. It makes the Star Wars universe feel very small.
The movie has also been heavily criticised for "video game plotting" for having the characters run around the Galaxy chasing nonsensical MacGuffins that don't organically advance the plot.
Personally I'm still planning on watching it over the Christmas holiday as it's a good movie to watch with family and friends. As long as it's entertaining, I don't care too much about the flaws in the movie as I'm not a big Star Wars fan to begin with.
Has anyone seen the movie yet? How about you, J-B ? What are your thoughts about the reviews and the movie in general?
