I'm a bit late to the party here... But we at Chez Chaz have just started watching this... Anyone else watching...?
We are still only into Series 1... But it makes for compelling viewing... I know it can never be 100% accurate... But the things that go on behind the scenes are astonishing...
And the amount of staff they have is beyond belief... No wonder it costs so much money to keep them going... They have servants just to open the doors for other servants... How the other half live eh...?
It was Elizabeth's Coronation on the one we watched last night... So as I said still early days... But quite looking forward to the Thatcher years... And then the Diana ones...

I'm halfway series 2 - but I've been that way for about 2 years lol!
I will get round to watching the rest of it but I think series one and two will be the best but I could be wrong. I mainly believe this because of Olivia Colman, I don't mind her but she tends to play Olivia Colman in everything she's in. Plus they've kept her eyes brown! The Queen has big blue eyes FGS.
IIRC weren't the coronation scenes interspersed with scenes of he who abdicated (Edward VIII?). I thought that actor was very good and made human someone who was (probably naturally) was treated as a pariah and was their equivalent of Prince Harry today but obviously a lot worse because he actually abdicated the throne.

Would he have abdicated if he’d been allowed to marry Wallis Simpson ? Shock, horror, she was American and divorced. Deja Vu ??

I think, going off what I saw... Edward really did want to be King... He had trained all his life to fill that role... But love got in the way...
Unlike George... Who came across as despising the role... Forced upon him but had no choice...

My mam (nearly 85) heard from her parents that the working class people really liked Edward VIII and thought he would have been a King who cared about them as he often visited poor communities, mining/shipping areas etc. There wasn't universal condemnation for him, many of the 'normal folk' thought he should have been able to marry her and keep the throne, there was quite a bit of sympathy for him. Of course others (probably more) wanted to burn him at the stake giving the throne up for 'a woman!' and not a particularly attractive one at that lol!

My Mum when she was alive used to talk about David (Edward VIII) too and said it was a travesty that he never remained as King. She agreed that he had a lot of time for the working class and went out of his way to spend time with them. Mind you she was a bit of a romantic and wouldn't say a bad word against Wallis (my namesake) because she truly loved her to his dying day even although if truth be told she was apparently a nasty piece of work. They remained together though and not many folks these days can say that. I think she missed him terribly after he died and became a recluse in Paris.

I've started watching The Queen's Gambit as recommended by MissL. Seen up to episode 3 and it's rather good. About a young female chess prodigy and it's better than it sounds Once again with Netflix, beautifully filmed.

Started the new 5th series last night... In series 1-4 they got the casting spot on with the resemblances of the Queen and Philip... In this one the Queen looks nothing like her and Prince Philip looks the the Major from Faulty Towers... And don't get me started on Prince Charles, I thought it was Harry Enfield's Tim Nice but Dim...
They must have spent soooo much time on casting Diana and William who are dopple gangers BTW... They didn't have much time to spend on finding good looky likeys for the rest of them... Feels like the first person to audition got the job... Still very entertaining though...

I don't watch it mainly as I don't have Netflix but don't you dare knock the wonderful Dominic West. I've seen photos of him in the role and I think he does resemble Charles.

Episode 3 Series 5 was entirely dedicated to the Al Fayed story... I thought it might have been a bit boring but on the contrary it was really interesting... Watching him from a young lad growing up and how acquired firstly the Ritz in Paris, then Harrods and then finally the Villa in Paris owned by Edward and Wallis...
He lovingly had the Villa restored including all of the furniture and late King's personal effects... Only for all of the items to be aquisitioned by the Royal family and took back to England... Rightly or wrongly they took it but didn't want it before it was all restored...
It was just the thought of Al Fayed having it that they didn't want... This episode really shown the bigotry of the Queen, Philip and the rest of the horrible bunch... She couldn't even be bothered to sit in her rightful place at the Horse Gala... Because as the owner of Harrods and the Gala's sponsor it meant she would have had to sit next to Al Fayed...

Now on to the 3rd/4th series with Olivia Colman as the Queen and I don't think it's as good or gripping; why they just didnt age Clare Foy who was absolutely fantastic as the younger Queen I do not know. She seems to have changed personality as well, from a caring, kind, smart lady to a distant, cold, selfish, priggish out of touch woman. The fact I cannot stand Olivia Colman probably doesnt help. Prince Phillip's likeable easy going manner seems to have changed as well as his head. Helena Bonham Carter is fantastic as the middle aged Princess Margaret though and have felt really sorry for her the way she was treated (if its true). Will persevere

New series, dealing with Diana's death and the aftermath starts on Netflix on Thursday. Don't be fooled BB... Episode 1 airs on the 16th yes... But it's an entire month before episode 2 is shown... We're probably just going to wait until after Chrimbo... When there's feck all on the TV and watch it all together... We've loads on or starting now, Master Chef, I'm a Celeb, Masked Singer, The Voice, Strictly...

We've loads on or starting now, Master Chef, I'm a Celeb, Masked Singer, The Voice, Strictly... There are four episodes, watched them yesterday which goes up to the aftermath of Diana's (and Dodi's) death and the mass outpouring of grief and the poor tunnell visioned way the Royals handled it (remember it well). The last four are on 14 December which covers the Queen relenting to Charles marrying Camilla and William going to St Andrews and meeting Kate. Not sure if it ends with the Queens death in September 2022 but that would be the natural end of this totally riviting and sterlingly acted 'story'. Truly excellent.
