New drama, some are up in arms about a black actress playing Anne.

Well Anne Boleyn was not black. Does that mean Queen Elizabeth I was mixed race?

It's a modern adaptation where anything goes. I saw a similar one some years back of Hamlet with Ian McKellen before he became a Sir. He's about to do it all again at 81 so colour or age shouldn't come into it.

I can see both sides.
There's an outcry because this is history, Anne Boleyn existed, was definitely white and therefore some believe that casting should strictly adhere to this especially as there would be an outcry if Nelson Mandela or Malcolm X were played by white guys.
But it's different and less simplistic than that in my view. Black actors in our country never get their teeth on these juicy historical roles, if they appear at all it's in the role of servant, slave etc not the main deal or a 'token' black face so that the producers can say they're being inclusive. That must be soul destroying for these actors when they're just as capable of putting in a good performance. Why shouldn't they have a go? It's only a play, no one is 're-writing' history. It's a female playing an historical female at the end of the day.
And as Walls says drama has always mixed it up, years ago I saw a performance of Merchant of Venice where it was set in the 20s with a multi-racial cast and it was great, really enjoyed it. So I'm completely open to it but at the same time I can see why it's wound some people up.

If Titanic had a black actor playing Jack Dawson I would nor should not mind, nor if a black actor played one of the Titanic characters that actually existed such as JJ Astor or William Murdoch. It is only a piece of fiction based on a real life event. No rewrite of history.

I enjoyed the series whether it was right to cast a black actress in the role? who cares. The 3 parter was very good, although the ratings sucked. A shame, for those that didn't watch, they missed a good piece of drama.

Anyone see the Boleyns A Very Scandalous Family on BBC1 (on Iplayer)? A lot of talking heads but an interesting watch. I didn't know that Mary Boleyn the King's one time mistress, her lineage goes right down to our present Queen.
