In fairness 1976 was when the drama ramped up a pace after the move of the "village" scenes from Arncliffe to Esholt.
But what if Emmerdale had become more sensational at the time?
When Robert Sharp said that half of his son in law Joe Sugden's share in Emmerdale Farm belonged to Christine, Joe would end up having a fight with Robert and accidentally killing him then getting away with it.
Matt Skilbeck would have wed Dolly in 1978 but would have had an affair with Pat Merrick when she was about to marry Jack Sugden. And it was revealed in October 1982 when Pat and Jack married. Jack would kidnap Matt and hold him at gunpoint but Annie would talk them out of it.
David Annersley, the man who was rumoured to have had an affair with Annie Sugden would turn out to be Joe Sugden's father.
It would be revealed that Robert Sugden was Matt's son, as him and Pat had a final rendezvous in the autumn of 1985 3 years after their affair.
Matt would have actually killed Harry Mowlam in 1986, and guest character Derek Warner would be innocent. After that, Matt would be more villainous after years of being a boring shepherd apart from his affair with Pat Merrick/Sugden. Matt would have killed Stephen Fuller in 1988 and be charged with his murder, and the murder of Harry Mowlam would also be linked.
It would be revealed in 1989 that Frank Tate was a secret lovechild of Annie Sugden and Henry Wilks after a brief fling in early 1937 when she was still Annie Pearson, and it would totally fudge the fact Henry had never stepped foot in the village before 1972. And that Sam Pearson helped cover up the fact his daughter had a child out of wedlock and ruining his character when he was alive as he hated that stuff. (Like Helen Daniels in Neighbours regarding Jill Ramsay).
