When EastEnders began in Feb 1985 it had mixed reactions, and after watching the first episode or two some real life East Enders said "The East End is not like that". Others said "Not too bad I guess".
I think EE did depict more social realism back in the day but it is nice to know some Londoners back then said it is "not really like the real East End", just as much as people moan about Easties today being nothing like East London. A survey of Fassett Square in Hackney in 1987 said that their lives are much more peaceful than Albert Square.

Wasn't Corrie seen as out of date by 1960s standards when it began? I guess that makes sense as some ideas were taken from Tony Warren's own life experiences when growing up.
But then again, soaps now are definitely a fantasy land. As if there are streets and villages with so much mayhem and murders going on every month.
