The killing of Saskia was a good storyline. It happened in Feb 1999 and the storyline was one of the biggest storylines of that year. Steve Owen bashed her over the head with an ashtray and tried to frame Matthew. They buried her body in Epping Forest. He bullied Matthew and in the end after Matthew and Teresa Di Marco went on the run when Saskia's body was found, Matthew and Steve were later arrested. Steve was acquitted on both counts but Matt was found guilty of manslaughter.
However Steve's fingerprints were found on the ashtray and Matthew was released, he came back and got revenge on Steve before deciding to leave Albert Square and Walford for good that night. In Feb 2000 Matthew held Steve hostage and then took £10'000 and walked off into the night never to be seen again in Walford.
As of 2015 Matthew's whereabouts are unknown.

I always found Matthew to be a miserable sod, in fact I hated the whole Rose family. I wasn't that bothered that Steve Owen did the dirty on Matthew either.

When Matthew Rose had Steve Owne tied up and poured 'petrol' over him, how come Steve couldn`t smell it? We find out later it`s water, but even in Steves panicked state he could have still smelled the petrol. That scene never rang true to me at all.

And why didn't Steve overpower Matthew? He broke free from being taped up and then Matthew threatened to blow the place up and Steve was free, he could easily have winded Matthew and ran for safety. If I was in Steve;s shoes I would have overpowered him as Steve had plenty of opportunity, being a lot bigger.

Matthew Rose was a snivelling wimp of a kid, having him reducing Steve Owen to tears in that whole revenge plot was laughable, and that's before you even factor in the petrol smelling water aspect ?

I really enjoyed this s/l. Although I wasn't Matthew's biggest fan (I honestly never think about him until someone brings him up), his revenge plan was executed brilliantly. Steve was at his best here, too.

I really liked Matthew Rose and thought the character could have been huge if he had stayed
