I have many 1988 episodes on DVD and apart from Jackie Merrick's wedding in February, many of the storylines that year was Nick and Archie selling eggs, Alan Turner losing his voice, Seth's false teeth, Amos thinking his wardrobe was full of woodworm and Henry Wilks spotting a Siberian Thrush in the local woods in March, and attracting bird watchers. Very gripping storylines. No wonder the show was revamped in 1993.
I remember 1988 very well and can remember the Farm days of the show.
Watch 1988 Home And Away and you will see what a modern soap really was like. Teens, beaches, the Fletcher couple, Summer Bay High.

I`m such a fan of Emmerdale and Emmerdale Farm that even boring storylines are ok with me. The beautiful scenery and the dialogue more than made up for mundane storylines. In my opinion anyway

I sometimes wonder if ITV killed off the wrong soap? Crossroads in 1987-1988 was far more realistic than this.

I have watched a huge chunk of 1988 EastEnders and Home And Away and they really did make Emmerdale Farm in 1988 look out of date. EE and H&A had youngsters, classroom scenes, up to date music and good stories.
I think in 1993, Phil Redmond was called in to revamp the show and a plane crash did just that.
Neighbours in 1988 was more out of date than H&A.

Wow ...you`re a goldmine of info CAEF. I had no idea Phil Redmond was involved in the revamp and plane crash. The writing and disaster scenes were top notch.

Well in a way Emmerdale Farm was axed in 1989 and a new show called Emmerdale began, a show less about farming and more about the village and Dynasty style scandals. RIP Emmerdale Farm 1972-1989. Emmerdale Farm left our screens years ago. November 1989.
Corrie, EE, Neighbours and H&A never went for a title change or a radical change in direction, all 4 have evolved naturally.
Emmerdale Farm was about sleepy farming issues and the most dramatic thing to happen was Amos dropping a beer glass. In 2015, we have kidnappings, unplanned pregnancies, psychos, violent criminals, chavs and two bit lushes. Totally unheard of in the Farm days.

Corrie is still Corrie despite its silliness, still a show about back street families. Ditto for EastEnders. Ditto for Neighbours And ditto for H&A even though it is not an inner city soap, it is still a show about troubled teens and families living in an Aussie coastal town.
