I really like the Max character so will miss him while he's away. Hopefully his (temporary) exit story will be exciting

Agree with you both. I think Jake Wood is great and I like the character of Max. Hopefully they will have something better in mind for him on his return.
I wonder if Philth's involved in his exit somehow.

I like both Max and Jake but I think a break for the character is a must. He just goes from one sexual conquest to the next these days and hopefully they will give him a fresh and juicy plot when he returns.

Although his character is a complete slime-ball he is one of the best actors in E.E. I know he is held in very high regard by his fellow actors. I suspect writing him out will be centered around him being accused of Lucy's murder but I just hope that when he does return he is giving better story-lines to allow him to do justice to his craft rather than just bed a string of continual babes. I don't mean Annette Badland by that last remark, as if!

About bloody time. Terrible, one-note character. It might only be a one-year break, but one year without Max and his tediously boring romances/affairs is paradise in my eyes. I'm hoping by the time Jake Wood feels ready to come back, there is a new producer in charge and refuses to bring Max back. Nothing against Jake Wood, but I feel Max has nothing more to offer the show and is well past his sell-by date. His crappy, predictable storylines drag the show down. How many more affairs can he have? How many more young girls can he take advantage of? The writers simply aren't willing to take Max in a different direction. Move him on and bring in better characters.

You could say the same about Phil's storylines being the same over and over again though with the whole hardman act. Do you dislike Phil too? I still like you though obviously :-)

You could say the same about Phil's storylines being the same over and over again though with the whole hardman act. Do you dislike Phil too? I still like you though obviously :-) Haha, nothing wrong with expressing a different opinion . We can't agree on everything . Max seems to have a lot of female posters under his spell, though smiley-biglaugh . Yes, I feel the same about Phil and I loathe him as much as Max, if not more. But they're never going to axe Phil unfortunately because he's a legend (IMO nobody should be safe from the axe, even the legends). Additionally, Phil has been in some great storylines throughout his time on the show - Who Shot Phil?, Sharongate, Get Johnny, Alcoholism & Abuse of Kathy, Car Lot Insurance Scam, Steve Owen feud etc - and unlike Max, he has been in a wide range of different plotlines. So I would argue Phil has continously proved that he deserved his place on the show. However, ever since Grant left back in 1999, Phil has become this one-dimensional, cowardly, playground thug and subsumed all the worse aspects of Grant's characterization. He has been in decline for a good 12 or 13 years now and I think it's time he left to be honest. Phil has nothing more to offer the show besides more boring feuds with the latest Square bad boy (e.g. Steve Owen, Dennis Rickman, Carl White, Derek, Dan Sullivan, Vincent etc) and I don't think I can stomach anymore of his 'storylines'. Max, on the other hand, is a one-hit wonder in my opinion - he came to fame with the Stax affair and literally his entire characterization since the day he arrived on the Square has revolved around women and sex . Despite several high-profile storylines since Stax such as Who Ran Over Max and Tanya Buries Max Alive. I don't feel he has reached the same heights since that infamous storyline, because the writers are obsessed with having Max shag every girl and don't let him grow as a character. I feel the only reason he was allowed to stay so long was because of the success of Stax and Diedrick Santer. They need to take him in a new direction and explore other aspects of his life, instead of focusing on women and sex all the time. But we all know the writers won't do that.

Generally, I hate characters who go around in a loop with the same plotlines and start dragging the show down. Kat and Alfie are another example - their entire relationship revolves around Alfie being a doormat and Kat cheating on him when she gets bored. Why can't Alfie and Kat be a stable married couple and face problems together? Why does Kat have to cheat on Alfie every time when the going gets tough? I actually liked them as a pairing once upon a time, but the writers simply have no imagination and have ruined everything that was once good about them. So I'm glad Kat and Alfie are leaving temporarily, because they don't have anything more to offer to the show besides affairs, breakups and getting back together. They have become a liability to the show as have Max and Phil IMHO.
10 years ago, I felt the same about Ian too, he was either in financial trouble or proposing to women and being cheated on all the time. However, Ian's storylines in recent years have helped to revitalise the character and brought him back to the front and centre of the show where he belongs (the Homeless storyline, Steven kidnapping him and shooting Jane, Lucy's murder storyline etc).

Good explanations there TeeksI can't write long essays (!) as I generally use my phone or tablet to look at these forums and I'm rubbish at typing on the touch screen otherwise I'd probably explain my reasons more! I do agree most of Max's storylines are based on him shagging about although I enjoyed him trying to get one over on Phil recently (although that did partly involve a woman again!)
