I sometimes wonder if we look at tv from times gone by with rose tinted specs. itv in the 70's relied on American imports like Charlie's Angels, Hawaii Five O, Six million dollar man, the Bionic Woman, the list goes on, but you get my point. Quiz shows like 321 and Comedies like George and Mildred were hardly top notch. The Beeb in the 80's relied on US imports Dallas and Dynasty. However are todays offerings much better? Could you do without CS, ED or EE? Now days itv is heavily dependent on the soaps, do they need to reduce their output with the eventual goal of ditching them? It would be nice to have some mid evening hour drama's that run for say 12 weeks. Also some sit coms perhaps? although the genre is pretty dead. UK TV in general is in a pretty stale state on all channels. The ratings reflect this. It would be nice for some one to come along and shake the whole system up. I live in hope.

You are not wrong HIMD, tv is not great atm. Just the same old stuff repeated and rehashed along with stale formatted and done to death 'reality' shows. There seems to be nothing innovative really.
Now and again something will come on that I really enjoy, probably the last being Happy Valley for me.
I used to really enjoy Big Brother (controversial) in its heyday because it felt interactive with all of the live feed to view, those days are gone and there is no equivalent now.
Of course there is the soaps, but as we know on here they do tend to go in cycles of how entertaining they are.
Good topic.

It seems the more channels there become the less there is to watch!

I used to love Play for Today, Tales of the Unexpected , Saturday Night Theatre and all the one off dramas. We never seem to have plays any more. I miss those.

I think the last couple of Drama's I really enjoyed were not on the main channels but on BBC2 and CH4. The spy drama The Game and the police drama No Offence. There has been nothing to grab my attention really on either main channels BBC One or itv.

Reality shows are cheaper to produce than a period costume drama. And with Downton Abbey winding down in its last season, there are not many period costume dramas available - hopefully we`ll get Home Fires back, and also another series of Mr Selfridge this autumn.

With reference to the BBC and the charter renewal, in my view it is quite simple and straight forward and as an article in the Guardian said, you have to ask yourself the question 'do you want PSB?' If the answer is yes, what type of model, something on the lines of CH4 or a slimmed down watery version of the BBC. The answer is not to cut the tv tax or increase it, I personally think the government DO NOT want PSB, they have not got the balls to make the corporation commercial. They have said the tv tax does not work, Make the BBC a commercial network of channels and let them fight it out with itv. Of course itv would not want this as they would be the loser in all this. I like the idea of turning the BBC into a production unit like itv productions. Perhaps we should model our tv similar to the Yanks or what they have in Oz. An option is to have a PSB channel with a mix of PSB shows from all channels, Mainly it would consist of the BBC and CH4 and the channel would have a different name. This would then free BBC One to continue dominating the tv landscape and continue with popular shows as EastEnders, Dr Who, Holby, Casualty, Strictly, Poldark, Call the Midwife, Mrs Brown etc. With reference to BBC Radio, stations one, two and five could be commercial, leaving three and four to be PSB stations. I just wish this government would be honest, but then when is a politician this? ?? I make no bones about it, I absolutely loathe this government with a passion!!!!!!!!! Perhaps I should not blame the government, but blame the people who voted them in! hit-smileys

Last night's telly was absolutely DIRE. We have the basic Sky package here, hundreds of channells but with bugger-all to watch on any of them with whats most annoying two Beeb channels devoted to poxy tennis!! If I paid a licence fee I'd be even more outraged!

I think every decade has been a mixture of good and bad - it is just that the good tends to stick in people's minds more and is usually repeated more. Of course, also when there were only 2, 3 or 4 channels and no multi screen cinemas or home computers and tv switched off at midnight, there weren't as many hours to fill and more of the population watched everything, good or bad.
There have been homegrown quality sitcoms and dramas in every decade as well as relying on US imports. The 70s had thing like I, Claudius, pennies from Heaven, Poldark, Rising Damp, Fawlty Towers, whatever Happened to the Likely Lads, the 80s Edge of Darkness, Singing Detective, Bird of Prey, Boys from the Blackstuff, Only Fools and Horses, Just Good Friends, Yes Minister.
Plus of course there were more generic, scifi or soapie shows which would air for a quarter of the year like The Brothers, Howards Way, Blakes 7! Casualty when it started and even things like Angels as well as play for today, tales of the iunexpected, shows like The New Avengers, The Professionals, the Champions, so I'm not sure we can say they relied on American shows any more than now.
The big change, as said has been the rise of reality tv which is cheap. I liked Big Brother when it started, it truly was innovative to see people locked away from the world 24 hours a day virtually live but that was back before it became gimmicky.
Personally i do think we need PSB and it should be paid for by all but independent of the government. There should be somewhere that quality can be concentrated on even if the ratings (and therefore advertising revenue) isn't good and also where pressure can't be put on advertisers or sponsors to pull out if an extreme minority don't approve as has happened in America with Homophobes in particular.
The big problem with the license fee recently is the get out clause of people only watching catch up online being exempt. That has created a massive shortfall which needs to be addressed.

Interesting ideas about a different type of PSB. When was that article in The Guardian? If it was during the last week i might try and rescue it from my Dad's recycling as I'm over today!
I guess I'm old school and would prefer it to stay as it currently is, everybody that has a tv (and i would extend that to anybody that uses I-Player even if on a tablet or computer) should pay a nominal amount so we have a truly universally funded service for all.
But if that is no longer viable, then your suggestions could work.
I just don't want it to be totally fund raising by pledge drives the way many US stations used to be.
