There's loads of unlikable characters on EE in fact there are very few likable ones but with Shirley it's more than that, I actually feel detest and disgust for her. For all of the characters that I dislike in EE every single one of them has at least 1 redeeming feature but Shirley has none. She's lazy, shallow, bitter, selfish cruel and mean, basically an all round very nasty piece of work.

Phil for instance does some dreadful things, often for no reason other than his perverse enjoyment over exerting power and humiliating another (he is in short a bully) but even though it leads him to do the wrong thing, i do believe in his love for certain people, most noticeably Ben and his frustration and dislike of himself for failing as a son, husnabd and especially father. Also, from what we've seen of Peggy, Archie and heard about Eric, i understand why he is as he is and have some sympathy for him. With Shirley, even thought they've tried to introduce the neglectful/abusive mother and father, being forced to give her baby up, feeling the CF was a 'punishment' of her it still comes across that other people have similar or even worse backgrounds but do,'t end up as spiteful and destructive as Shirley and that she has thrown away every chance she has been given (chances many others don't get) and hurt others as well as herself in the process. That makes her very hard to like or even empathise with. I look at her and think i should feel sorry for her but just can't bring myself to.

Shirley is a desperate, bitter, lonely, two bit lush who belongs in the gutter with her only real friend, her vodka bottle. She deserves to die alone ...... a cold, friendless death with no ceremony. Amen. Can't beat a Mo Mouse post on the matter..!

On reflection I've decided to stop fence sitting so much and voted 'No' I don't like Shirley. As great an actress as Henry is I find shirley's backstory unconvincing and not enough to excuse her attitudes so i could even begin to 'like' her.

Hard one. Is she a good character, IMO absolutely. I take great joy out of watching her, usually grinding my teeth and snarling at her lousy attitude, her sense of entitlement, the excuseville* that seems to follow her around and my jaw dropping at how often she handles situations incredibly badly but then there's also how she was with Carol (even though she'd slapped her a few days previously!) where another side of her is shown, the side which is usually hidden beneath the sneer and vodka and you think "why can't they show her more like THIS?"
She also gives me something to sound off at and I like her for that, nothing worse than a dull soap soap character (but unlike Bethany and Sarah on Corrie I enjoy sounding off about Shirley and she doesn't put me off watching the programme like they do!)
Would I miss Shirley if she left? Yes.
So do I like her as a character. Yes. Do I like her as a person? 99% of the time, no and I'd avoid her like the plague in real life so I've had to go with 'no' as the question says 'as as person'.
(* - it's bewildering to me how many people both on and off the programme will excuse her behaviour! There's always some excuse to pull out of the bag when Shirley behaves appallingly. Never known anything like it!)

I'd miss her like a hole in the head.
It's been great not having her onscreen this week. Unfortunately, we have had to put up with the odious Claudette.
Who is worse?
There's only one way to find out....

Odious Claudette smiley-huh I really like her and may even love her if she is going to successfully take on Phil. Back to Shirley though and I just wanted to smack her in the face when she was childishly trying to get an invite to Libby's Birthday party and calling Libby stuck up It was her bessie Denise that didn't want her there, Libby couldn't care less. She really is just a jealous bitch

Shirley specialises in turning up to things where she is not invited and nobody wants her there. She has no dignity whatsoever. She is also a desperate, bitter, two bit lush who should die alone in the gutter. Thanks guys, I'm off for a cup of tea and a tuna sandwich now.

Shirley is why Deano has many rejection issues, she abandoned him and even now she is a shit mother.

Although she is a revolting old hag, I love Linda Henry. I would much rather have a revolting character than an annoying sugary sweet, old red head, Vera Lynn wanabee, dear type, running a newsagents toffee shop, who in my eyes is equally revolting. m1323

Agreed. I absolutely loathe Shirley with a fiery passion but I hate that old sow Rita even more.

I love Shirley and all her inadequacies.
Never being one to go with the flow I am overjoyed to see that she still has her only friend on this Forum in me.

I've got nothing against that Shirley bloke, but I do think he'd do well to invest in a nice pair of gutties instead of lolloping around in those huge boots all the time.
I dread to think what state the fella's bunions are in.
My old Nan always said to me, look after your feet Uncle Q and they'll look after you.
