Basically I'm ripping off Scrabbler's poll/thread from DS because I thought it was quite interesting to see the replies over there.
Scrabbs' poll is quite close I noticed, so I wondered if there was any Shirley love (at all) on our little forum.
Feel free to slate/praise Shirls however you see fit in the comments.

No I don't like her at all. Strangely, when I used to watch Bad Girls I always thought Linda Henry would be an excellent choice for a love interest for Phil Mitchell. But sadly, when it happened I was thoroughly disappointed. Mainly because Shirley is so inconsistently written and she is purely used to snarl abuse and I struggle to find anything likeable about her. Ian's a weasel, Phils a thug, Janine was a bitch and yet they are characters so well developed that I still find them interesting and likeable. Shirley lacks depth, she lacks motivation and I struggle to sympathise with her.
Shirley is probably the only character in current EE who I actually dislike, there are a couple I feel indifferent about like Lee and Fatboy but they are rarely used so I don't mind them being in the show.
I wish Shirley would leave, but that is never likely to happen while DTC is still in charge.

She is a pretty despicable character played by a first class actor. We need people to dislike in soaps just as in life and I like to dislike the character. Soaps are serial dramas focusing on emotional relationships and boy have we seen plenty of emotion from Shirley over the years. Some of her one-liners have been epic. The fact that the producers have decided to recon the character to some extent doesn't bother me as much as it does others. The character is brassy, rough, tarty, tough-as-old-boots and too dependent on the odd bottle of voddy or two. People like that do exist but as Shirley has shown she can be a good and faithful friend also.

See that's where I disagree, she is always rude and nasty to her so called friends and she even profited from Heathers death. i do feel that the popularity of the character stems from Linda's delivery of the one liners, if she wasn't great at her put downs she wouldn't be liked as much.

Can't stand the woman, although I can't fault Linda Henry's performance at all. Shirley's a poisonous bully who, for some inexplicable reason, is never put in her place by anyone. Her sense of entitlement is astounding; all she has to do is shout the loudest for long enough and she gets her way. The way she's reacted over the Dean/Linda thing has been utterly appalling; there's defending your son and then there's how Shirley's behaved. By rights, Mick should permanently ostracize her from his family, mother or not. She spoke to Heather like she was a piece of crap before she died and then used her death to squeeze money out of Phil (so much for 'justice'). She shoots Phil, legs it and then gloated about it when she came back. Forced her way into the Masoods to harangue Shabnam about Jade, not seeming to give a damn that Shabnam was just recovering from a gang beating. Treating Buster like garbage but getting jealous over Carol and punching her. Belittling Max working in the chippy the other night... the list goes on.
She's just a horrible, horrible woman that seems to get away with so much time after time with no proper comeback on her. To this day I'll never understand why Stan got his head dunked under a load of water for trying to drown Mick yet when Shirley confessed it was really her, she got a hug and all the understanding in the world smiley-huh The "Poor Shirl" card has been played way too often in that family and it's given her free reign to behave however she wants towards them. I think it's going to happen again when it's finally clear for all to see that Dean's a rapist; she'll inevitably get completely wasted, be all weepy and wail about wanting to be a good mum and everyone will have to feel sorry for her - "Poor Shirl, she wasn't to know" free-rolleye-smileys-323

We can all have our own opinions but she is a well liked character by many people I know.
We need controversial characters to provide us with the opportunity to discuss and debate. Without characters like Shirley it would be so humdrum and boring.

It's funny how we all see things differently. And it's great that we can differ in opinion here without scary partisan behaviour As for me, I don't like her. Pretty much for the same reasons as others above. Also because I very much didn't like the way she treated Linda after the rape. I completely get that she she would want to support her kid, flipping heck I'll openly admit I'd probably do a Jane and Ian if Bobby were my kid, but it was the way she went out of her way to be cruel to Linda that got me.

She can be nice at times like with Carol when she helped her to look at her scars, and to Jean at her wedding. Her and Hev had some good comedy moments together at times which were nice. Unfortunately though she is horrible and rude pretty much 99% of the time and I'm sure she knows Dean raped Linda yet still sticks by him

But it's never consistent.

Without characters like Shirley it would be so humdrum and boring. Characters like Ian, Phil, Michael and Janine are so flawed and do/did outrageous things but they were interesting. Shirley lacks the same depth and is not in the same league. Hell, even Peggy who was absolutely poison at least had moments of self awareness where she realised what she was doing/said was wrong. Shirley think she's right no matter what the situation,

I voted and I don't even watch it now but when I did I didn't like Shirley very much... She would be the sort of person who in real life I would avoid like the plague...
Not even the remotest hint of any sex appeal either... And I do like a nasty skank now and then but not Shirley...

Yes she does and there are plenty people about just like that. I can think of one who I happen to work alongside who throws a strop and gets all defensive if he is proven to be wrong about anything. As I said originally I like to dislike Shirley. I do not condone her behaviour most of the time but she brings a different personality angle to the show.

A two bit lush, a scrubber and a slubberdegullion is a way to describe our Shirzza Carter.

I'll say the same here as i did over on DS. I'm not going to vote as i think there is too much room for debate as to what the question actually means - no offence.
What i mean by that is does it mean I like to dislike her, i enjoy watching her, i like Linda Henry's acting, i like her as a person, she'd be friend in real life etc.
So, my position is that i think Linda Henry is a fantastic actress who i enjoy watching, Shirley is an interesting character so in that respect, i like her. But I find her an utterly desirable excuse for a human being and although they have tried to explain why she has become like this, it is not enough to excuse her vileness and the small glimpses of niceness (like with Carol) are too few and far between to really make a difference so ihat respect i'd have to say no.
Now there are plenty of 'grey' characters like that in the show, characters who are often horrible that i would ultimately say I like such as Ian, David Wicks, Max Branning but Shirley and Phil I'd have to come down as No, although i feel i understand a lot of Phil's actions more than i do Shirley.

Shirley is a desperate, bitter, lonely, two bit lush who belongs in the gutter with her only real friend, her vodka bottle. She deserves to die alone ...... a cold, friendless death with no ceremony.
Amen.
