I honestly wouldn't like to say. I suppose it might depend on Australia where I understand H+A is slightly more popular. They are both propped up with money from Ch5 now aren't they?

Yes Channel 5 has a deal with channel 7 who make Home & Away in Oz. 5 pay's the production costs of the show for the life span of the show. When itv and Channel 5 were bidding for the soap back in the late 90's, itv bid more for the show but channel 7 were impressed with channel 5's commitment to the show long term. I believe the contract for Neighbours expires in the next couple of years, so all will depend on how much 5 bid, if they do. I am sure the BBC would not be interested in Neighbours now as they have their own successful soap in the afternoon Doctors and have Pointless doing good business for the corporation at teatime. The BBC in the early 90's put a lot of money into Neighbours when it looked like it was going to fold in Oz, but back then Neighbours on BBC One had a combined audience of over 16 Million viewers. smiley-yikes Channel 5 pay all the production costs for Neighbours, so it does not cost Channel 11 anything to air the show in Oz. The shows future is in the hands of the UK.
I would say Neighbours will probably be first to go as it's ratings are so low in Oz they only just register, they sometimes fall below 200k, although Neighbours still rates higher in the UK than Home and Away. Neighbours has always been more popular than Home and Away in the UK.

The way H&A is going lately, I`ll be surprised if it makes it to its 30th anniversary in 2018.

Bumping this thread, while Neighbours is more popular in the UK, I do feel it will be the first to go of the 2 soaps. As holey said, Neighbours is on life support in Oz whereas H&A is the "Corrie, Crossroads and EE" of Aussie soaps.
Neighbours is slightly older than H&A but age does not matter to ratings, and as H&A is more popular, it will be "Highest rated show, last out".

Home and Away is not as popular in OZ as it was, but still rates alot better than Neighbours. If Neighbours continues to be popular in the UK it will still be made for a UK audience even if it does not air in Australia.
Channel 5 have invested heavily in the show, it is even airing on christmas day for the very first time.
