Neighbours is 30 and H&A is 28, but H&A was first pitched in about 1985 and expedited by Neighbours being axed from Channel 7 and picked up by a rival channel.
In 1988 Neighbours and H&A were taking Oz and the UK by storm.
As of 2015, both shows are still going and show no signs of stopping. Yet A Country Practice, S&D, Prisoner, Number 96, Blue Heelers have all succumbed to the axe, yet Neighbours and H&A begun in the 1980s and are still around in 2015, spanning 4 decades, 80s, 90s, Noughties and Teenies. ACP and Blue Heelers ran for about 12 years.
Could it be they are more internationally famous than any other Aussie soap?

I still watch All Saints on Hulu. I`m up to season 11, so only one more season left. I`ll be sad when I watch them all. A Place To Call Home is a superb show. Even my hubby raves about it, and he`s not one for praise when it comes to costume dramas usually. I`m getting ready to watch the last episode of season 3, and now will have to wait a year to watch season 4.
What I love about Australian soaps and dramas is that whatever show you watch, you can always spot someone in that show that you recognise from another show.
The secret to both Neighbours and Home & Away`s success is that not only gorgeous locations, but the fact is that teens are watching it, and that their parents also watched it when they were their teens age. It`s a shame that neither H&A or Neighbours became popular in the USA. I remember in the late 90`s the Oxygen channel showed Neighbours episodes which were about 4 years old at the time. And the meanies took it of after about 6 weeks. In the early 90`s FX showed H&A from the beginning. And that only lasted about 3 months at most. It was when FX was a brand new channel and were experimenting with all different kinds of programmes. The Americans just didn`t give Australian soaps a chance to catch on - which was a huge shame.

Why have Neighbours and H&A survived so long?
In a nutshell because of the United Kingdom. In the 90's the BBC piled licence fee money into propping up Neighbours and Home and Away has a great deal with Channel 5 who will pay the costs of the soap for the life span of the show.

Neighbours could have ended in 1993 when Jim died and H&A could have ended in 1995 when Shane and Angel got wed, but the UK has propped them both up and they are still around in 2016.
Could they reach 40? Maybe, in 1988, thinking both shows would be around in 2016 was unthinkable, yet they are.

Yes Oz soaps were regarded as good if they lasted 6 or 7 years like Sons & Daughters.
