I was yoo young to watch this when this originally aired. But I've watched reruns on BBC2 over the years during days off from school/college and work . It is a good show. I use to get confused over which one was Cagney and which one was Lacey . This show along with Murder She Wrote and Diagnosis Murder were three of my favourite daytime shows .

Cagney & Lacey is my all time favourite American Show, followed by Laverne & Shirley, Kate & Allie and The Golden Girls. (There is a bit of a pattern there.) s0238
The paring of Tyne and Sharon was genius. Although Meg Foster was ok as Cagney and Lorreta Switt was excellent in the film. C & L had a great ensemble. It had recently been repeated on BBC Two and I have the DVD set for Series 1.
So many good episodes and as the series went on they got better and better. It had everything in it, comedy, drama and could be hard hitting as well tackling many issues. My all time favourite Episodes was when Mary Beth Got arrested for being on a nuclear peace march and she met Detective Dupnik for the first time in Queens. smiley-biglaugh
In honour of the 14th Precinct I have changed my avatar to Mary Beth and Christine.

I started watching C&L when it first started. It was on Saturday nights. I remember Loretta Swit being in it, and then Meg Foster before Sharon Gless took over the role. One time C&L was in fear of being cancelled, and I signed a petition for it to remain on the air I even mailed it first class to America, and paid quite a bit in postage. My favourite episodes included the one where Mary Beth found a lump in her breast. She, Harvey, and Christine acted their hearts out. It was an outstanding episode. Tyne won an Emmy for that as I recall. Another great episode was the one where Mary Beth went into labour, and Christine`s car broke down on the Brooklyn Bridge on the way to the hospital. The scene where Christine is standing in the middle of the bridge holding her police badge to stop traffic still makes me laugh. Another excellent episode was when Christine`s father Charlie died. Sharon Gless won an emmy for that. But the best most outstanding episode of them all IMO is the episode where they confronted racism head on. I still recall the scene at the PD where racial words were bandied about to each other. Trying to defuse the situation Sgt Cagney called everyone in the PD derogatory names. Then Marcus Petrie yelled out that school bullies had called his daughter Lauren hateful names, and he was late for work because he was comforting his daughter who was very upset over the racial names she was being called. It was an amazing scene. Carl Lumbly was magnificent. I`m happy to see he is still acting.

I remember that scene with Petrie and what they called his daughter, it was a very powerful scene and in many ways C & L were ahead of their times. A Peak time drama on a major network with 2 female leads.

I`m sure that the particular scene I mentioned about Petrie should be coming up soon.....if Hulu have the guts to show it. Earlier I was reading a C&L episode guide, and in season 8, Petrie leaves.

Yes it was never quite the same when Petrie left.

I`m up to Season 6 episode 17 now HoleyD. Three more episodes til the ones I`m dreading because its so heartbreaking...Charley`s death, and Christine rapid decline into alcoholism. No one deserved an Emmy more than Sharon Gless that year. I really believe that because I know what will happen, its sharpened my awareness for what I know is coming. And I see the dialogue and acting of everyone involved so much more pristine and meaningful. Maybe its because I`m older, but I was so proud to watch it from its infancy and know what a superb show this truly is. And even 30+ years later, its still very popular in reruns. And it has probably gained a new generation of fans each time its shown.

Tyne and Sharon complemented each other so much. They were a duo and the two fitted like a glove. It was nice that one season Tyne would have a big storyline and then the next Sharon would and when this happened the other actor was always there, not in a supporting role but still as prominent. Lacey was always my favourite, I always wanted to be her Harvey. I would have painted those Lavs in the 14th for them. I just love Tyne Daly. I also admire Sharon Gless. I thought the feature length episodes when they returned when they were older dubbed 'The Menopausal years' were as good if not better than the original series. Barney Rosenzweig was a fantastic EP. IMO the writing just got better and better. They could tackle any subject. I wish they had done a few more specials. I suspect the appeal was probably not as strong, although C&L was always threatened to be axed after every season virtually. At least it ended on a high and never went down hill, which is a good thing. I remember when the Golden Girls finished (my favourite Sitcom) and Bea decided she wanted to finish, the show moved channels from NBC to CBS and returned as the Golden Palace. It was not the same for me and in away it tarnished the image of the golden girls for a brief moment. It would have been better to leave the show at the end of Series 7 on NBC. I still love that show now. The cast was amazing and Bea Arthur's timing was simply brilliant. I was fortunate to see Bea Arthur when she came to London at the Savoy Theatre to do her one woman show 'Just between Friends.' I don't think I had laughed so much. (sorry gone off piste a little)

(sorry gone off piste a little) Brilliant post HoleyD, and I agree so much with what you`ve said. Mary Beth Lacey was my favourite of the duo too, although I respected Chris, and thought she was great. I loved Harvey and Mary Beth`s relationship - especially when they fought like cat and dog yelling at each other, and then making up afterwards. It was the little touches so beautifully written that made them so perfect together. Things like Mary Beth taking Harveys bowling trophy with her when she gave birth to Alice as something that meant comfort to her. And then on a particular case the women were working on that had Mary Beth upset, and she told Christine she wanted to go home to be with her Harve. Things like that. And after watching them I wanted a relationship like that -and thankfully I do have one like that. I have have two sons just like The Lacey family - although they aren`t called Harvey Jnr and Michael. In the squad room my faves were Bert Samuels, Marcus Petrie, Coleman, and LeGuadia. I remember when Sidney Clute died, and they announced it just before the programme started, and again after it ended. It was so sad. I used to have a massive crush on Petrie. When the show started I used to blush like mad when he appeared.....even years later I remembered the crush and still felt my cheeks burning when I watched C&L reruns. I`m also a fan of the Golden Girls. Lifetime tv channel used to have back to back eps Monday-Friday at 5-6pm and I always watched them. Sophia and Dorothy were my two faves. It was a shame Bea and Betty didn`t get along well in real life, but everyone else seemed to.

Yes I heard that too which did surprise me. I saw a recent interview with Betty White where she said Bea didn't like her, but she did like Bea? I don't like these things being said by an actor when the other person in question is no longer here to give their take on things.I suppose as long as the two had a professional relationship that is all that really matters. I read some where that Bea Arthur was a very private, shy individual.

It's quite interesting looking at the speech patterns for the two characters. For example Mary Beth would never say can't or you'll. She would always say can not and you will. Both Tyne and Sharon were very strict with the scripts and if something was not quite right, it would be re written. After all they knew these characters inside out. Tyne was never afraid to speak out, even to the network CBS. As she had been with the show from the start (1981) her comments were taken seriously. This is a quote from Tyne, reference television:
"If TV is fast food, like McDonald's, and you have to wrap it up and get it out once a week," she says, "then, on this menu of french fries and onion rings and double burgers we would like to be the green salad. You've got to have something on the menu that's nourishing and interesting. If it's challenging to act, then it should be challenging to watch."
