Anyone else read this? I found a copy in a charity shop for 99p and its not bad, basically 1960-2003 novelized, now to keep it down to a mere 1088 pages some stories have been missed out and other things have been tweaked to suit the medium of a novel but as a book its pretty good. I also think some stories have been changed to become what the writers would have liked to have happened rather than what ended up on screen due to life's own constraints; for example in the book we read about Annie telling Ken about her retirement to Derby rather than simply fading away due to Doris' health at the time. Also when Hilda is taken ill caring for Stan we read them both being rushed to hospital and Eddie returning to break the bad news to her.
My only tip is to read it at a desk or table, its too heavy to hold in the air like you would with a normal paperback!

Yeap I bought it for my Mum the other Christmas. She loved it, but it was quite a big book to hold for saying it was a paper back.

I spend 2 afternoons a week traipsing around charity shops in Stafford or Sandbach and I've picked up a few of Corrie books along the way. One day I'll put a list up here!

The suicide of Janet Barlow ----------------------------
"Can I stay Ken?"
This is Val's uncle's house, he has one bedroom, I have the other, all that's left is the boxroom.
"That's fine, Ken. As I said its only for the one night, I'll be getting the train at six"
"Sure you don't want to talk?" said Ken as he found her some bedclothes.
I'll be leaving early but thanks all the same. I really appreciate it" as she took the bedclothes from Ken.
She went into the boxroom and closed the door, leaving Ken no option but to return downstairs.
Behind the closed door Janet opening her bag and extracted a bottle of pills, She looked around the tiny room, there was no glass so she opened the door and tiptoed across to the bathroom, in there she removed the toothbrushes from their mug, rinsed it under the tap and filled with cold water and then returned to the boxroom.
The next day Ken arrived home for lunch, he had a busy day ahead, the Pensioner's Club was due to meet in the afternoon and Youth Club in the evening, both were gruelling and he had been trying to convince one of the groups to move their day. However for now all he needed was a good lunch.
Albert was just finishing a piece of toast "a late breakfast" he said by way of explanation. Ken replied "well I'm having an early lunch" as he wandered through to the scullery that Albert called a kitchen.
Whose coat is that? asked Albert
"Coat?" replied Ken absently as he made himself some food, "oh yes" he recalled, "that is Janet's she came round last night after you went to bed and needed a place to sleep before she went to London, I hope you don't mind". Ken now feeling guilty that he hadn't checked with Albert first, after all this was his home and Ken was the lodger.
"She's still your wife isn't she?" replied Albert.
"In name I suppose she is" said Ken as he walked to the hall, Albert was right, that was the coat Janet wore last night.....
Ken ran up the stairs two at a time walked along the landing and tapped on the boxroom door
"Janet?" he said as he slowly opened the door. No reply
Janet was lying on the bed still in the clothes she was wearing last night, clenched around her fist was an empty pill bottle, her hand was cold to the touch and 6 pills tumbled out of it onto the blankets beneath her. She was dead. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think that's different to what was seen on screen? I'm just wondering how massive the upstairs is of Albert's house, he seems to have 2 bedrooms, a smaller boxroom, a bathroom and a landing!

I bought the book back in 2009. It was slightly updated and ended around when Vera Duckworth died and Tyrone and Molly got engaged (so around early 2008?) Some things are out of place, for example Liam and Paul Connor become the new managers at Underworld before Mike Baldwin dies, whereas in the series proper Mike died a few months before their arrival. Also some details of storylines are missed out. Alan Bradley doesn't die in the book, he is simply arrested after his attempt to kill Rita, so the stuff with him being struck by a tram is left out.
I do wonder if the book continues to be updated. I believe it originally ended during the millennium, and then they started adding more stuff over the years. Wish they would release it in volumes.
Looking on Amazon the latest release appears to be up to 2010. I wonder how much updates it got and what storylines they included.
