BBC4 are running a documentary on former EE director Antonia Bird tonight. Beforehand, they are showing the Den and Angie two hander from 1986 which she directed.

Bit of a closet BBC4 fan here. There's been some excellent documentaries on there.

I love BBC4. Aside from the 2 hours of Soaps o'er night (which i often do,'t get to see until the weekend), it is probably the channel I watch most.
I get so annoyed when people (well posters on DS) start saying all BBC1 progs, especially EE should just be put on BBC2 or BBC4 instead during sporting events as 'nobody watches them'. Hmm, yes they do, both channels have very loyal viewers.

I may watch that.
Also due to guests coming round I missed Thursdays EE but I think BBC4 does not play them later that night, I can watch on YouTube.

I am going to SKY+ it. Thanks for reminding me KK, I had forgotten it was on. Classic episode, if I remember rightly it was the first two hander and involved a window cleaner?

I think current episodes are only repeated on the channel W which is only available on Sky and Virgin I believe, which is a shame for those that don't have these platforms. Perhaps they would be better repeating it on a freeview channel like Drama? There is also iplayer.

Yes, it was he first two hander except for the window cleaner popping up every few mins and transmitted Autumn 86. I recorded it at the time (i used to have Orchestra rehearsal on Thursday evening so always recorded EE on timer, generally wiping each week as tapes were very expensive but I kept that one because it was so unusual and good. But, that was in Betamax and I haven" had a Betamax player for years so unable to watch it.
The only EE repeat is on W now which isn't freeview. They do very much assume that everybody has access to I-Player now and it really annoys me as a lot of people don't. The repeat used to be on BBC3.

I hope they put both these programme's on Sky to download, the EE episode in particular I would love to see that again after all these years. I'm recording several other things tonight which clash with these which is a drag.
Another closet BBC4 fan here! I'm always downloading history and music documentaries.
Shame about the repeats being on Channel W, until I fixed up the TV my son left in his room with a new aerial I had no idea that W wasn't on freeview. Bad form by the BBC, should have made the repeat accessible to all especially since they've done away with the omnibus.

As I say, it is the assumption that everybody has I-Player so they do,'t need it to be available any other way and it really annoys me.
A lot of people (especially older people) actually don't have a computer in the house or a Smart TV. A lot of people can't afford a smart tv and just converted their analogue tv via a freeview box which has no recording facility. A lot of people can't afford to pay for a subscription service like Virgin or Sky or even fast broadband. Plus of course, the people in rural communities where it isn't financially viable fir ultra fast broadband to be put in and if the internet speed isn't fast, I-Player just buffers constantly.
It really annoys me as these people have paid their license fee, in fact, their license fee is currently paying for I-Player whilst thousands (if not millions) of people don't pay the license fee at all using the loophole re not having to if only using I-Player. Although that is at last being dealt with.
To the episode, I really enjoyed that. I'd forgotten how grubby and dark the Vic was - the color schemes and also chipping paint and dirty wallpaper. And that kitchen - yuck. Though, we had that kettle and Dad still keeps it as a spare - i used it for a couple of weeks a while ago when mine broke in the run up to Xmas so i thought I'd wait for the sales.

Eminently sensible to have spares. They don't take up much room and sometimes you don't want to have to wait to get to the shops if one goes wrong. Plus, they are so cheap, you do tend to replace when you fancy a new color scheme and buy both to match (or if just one goes wrong) rather than them actually breaking. I've actually got my Nana's old hob top whistling kettle, (it's orobably about 80 or 90 years old now) so I can make tea if there is a power cut as the hob is gas.
Sorry, very off topic.
The documentary was great - Bird did such wonderful work. I'd forgotten she was one of the original Casualty directors - when Casualty was still good.

Speaking of which, i hate to be picky but the clip of Open Air clearly wasn't about the episode they showed the clip of as Holmes referenced it airing on Friday night and Season 1 (which that clip was from, Baz was there) aired on Saturdays!?!?

I have a spare kettle but my iron packed in today! I hate the chore so much that when I do decide to do it I go hell bent to get the job done and then it bloody well spat out water and died on me. Sorry, I didn't watch the documentary but may catch it on iplayer.

I'm exactly the same with irons and no, don't have a spare one of those. The thought of going overnight without a hot drink, awful - not being able to iron, well I can cope with it. I use it until it breaks then go buy a new one as and when i have to. I didn't even own an iron the first year I bought my house, my suits and dresses were dry clean (i had a lot of expendable income back then) and most of my tops were drip dry. My Dad was so horrified he bought me one for my birthday - I've never quite forgiven him for that one!

I know I'm a pedant but just checked and Open Air started 27th Oct 86 whilst Casualty started 6th September 86 so, even allowing for it going off for the Proms (which i don't actually think it did the first couple of years), episode 4 must have aired 3 weeks before Open Air started.
It just annoys me as it gives a false impression, that the episode they showed clips from changed the Govt's Secretary of State for Heaths view when they must have been discussing a different one.
