Until these 2 cheeky Aussie soaps came on in the late 1980s, Corrie, Emmerdale and Take The High Road were mainly for older people and EastEnders and Brookside were for all ages but had 2 episodes a week.
By 1995 Corrie and Emmerdale had become more youth orientated than ever before as had TTHR. In 1989 and 1994 Corrie and EE introduced a 3rd weekly episode. Emmerdale did in 1996. By 2000, most British soaps had many youngsters and many weekly episodes. I think the popularity of Neighbours and H&A contributed to that. They made the British soaps ditch a lot of their older people image and increased the weekly episode counts.

You'd think ITV would shy away from frequency given that Crossroads was once 5 times a week and the quality dropped. Think it was 3 times a week by 1988 when it was first axed.
