Has it ever appeared on screen...? I remember Seth always talking about it but I can't ever recall seeing it... I think it would be good for them to introduce it as an alternative to the Wooly... Perhaps with a pool table and a fruit machine...

Perhaps with a pool table and a fruit machine... and some decent bar staff, not ones that are constantly rude patronising, shouting at each other, throwing drinks or disappeared in the back on yet another family emergency leaving the pub empty.

In the 80s or early 90`s I remember a scene of a rival pub with the landlady who was played by Irma Barlow in Corrie. Not sure if it was the Malt Shovel or another pub. Sadly, time hadn`t softened her dulcet tones as I still couldn`t understand a word she said. If ever they were bringing in a Mother for Chas - she would`ve been the perfect contender. They even had the same laugh.

Yes Doreen Shuttleworth was the character she played with appearances in 1984,1985 and 1991. I think we've seen it fleetingly. I wouldn't be surprised if actually they just filmed the back entrance to the Wooly with a different sign over the door!

Ernie Shuttleworth was still the landlord of the Malt Shovel in 1999. That was 17 years ago and he was about 75 then. Last I heard was a Warren Shuttleworth took over.

I think she was written out after ill health and they had Zack wed Lisa. Be careful what you wish for WB, as they are indeed bringing in another cackling horror, in Chas and Cain's mother some time in the autumn.

I popped down the Malt Shovel for a couple last night, just to see what all the fuss was about.
Nice little boozer to be fair. They offer a pleasing range of casket ales, all of which are hand-pumped by actual bar staff. As opposed to irresistible 50-something sluts, a disgraced doctor, and a hyperactive pretend chef with a mouthy assistant.
They also boast a plethora of other things that you might expect to see in a public house. Namely toilets that are used for having a good slash or a sly wank, as opposed to ear-wigging secrets, confronting enemies, or doubling as the local bully's office.
Meanwhile back in the bar there was a great big telly on the wall showing the footy, and a nice pool table populated by a dozen fourteen-year olds, most of which were trowelled in make-up, wearing belts for skirts, and sipping cider'n'black halves whilst dancing to Justin Bible or whatever the Devil his name is.
And that was just the lads.
There's a good chance I'll become a regular at the Shovel, having already put my name down for the skittles team, not to mention doing a fair amount of ground work towards seducing the landlord's wife Emma.
She seemed delighted to have a real man in the pub.

Shit-hot at pool ... that sounds like you wanting me to seven-ball you. It's like you're almost asking for it.
Mind you, I've just remembered you grew up in a pub ...

BB I just checked on IMDB, and Sandra Gough did play both Nellie Dingle and Doreen Shuttleworth.

I love all the rival pubs mentioned in the soaps, like the "MaltShovel" in Emmerdale Farm, "The Flying Horse," "Weathey Arms" in Coronation Street and In EastEnders "The Rat."

There Is something very endearing about Emmerdale Farm in the 80's. I fondly remember the scenes in the Woolie with Amos and Mr Wilks in their blue kitchen eating breakfast, normally Mr Wilks cooking a full English.
