Clive the Foreman is a terrific shout Nath, he's probably one of the hardest men I've ever seen on telly. And I've seen Chuck Norris in stuff. He had my instant respect mate.
I've heard that the only reason Clive wasn't made a permanent character was because of the strict watershed. They just couldn't find a way to tone down the bloodcurdling violence he threatened with every look and glance.
A truly hard man.

I'll never forget the time he stubbed that cigarette out on the floor... In front of Owen who I think was on 60 a day but couldn't afford any...
I still have nightmares about it...

Don was a troubled soul. Before he married Ivy I'm sure he was quite a nice chap. I think a lot of the blame for how he turned out can be directed at Ivy and her mad behaviour after she lost her beloved Brian.
It really did feel like one thing after another for Don and he deserved a lucky break. I liked the fact that even after he lost his leg he carried on working. The funny phone calls never really fitted for me, it didn't seem Don's style. He was a more direct man. He spoke to your face.
Did he have to die? I think the writers ran out of ideas, with Ivy gone and him not being particularly close to the Tilsley-Platt children, who could he share scenes with. Buying the garage made no sense as he wasn't mechanically minded and was merely a device to render him more indebted and angry, especially towards Mike Baldwin.

I think Baldwin scammed Don so Don wanted revenge. Also Brian Tilsley was the only Geordie sounding Mancunian around and he was similar to Ray Langton, quite unlikeable and cocky.

Brian had to die. Quinten was too cocky, wanted to be semi regular character, split his time between Weatherfield and Tinseltown.
It was the right thing to do, it opened up a new life for Gail. Plus David Platt would never have existed and he is a brilliant character.

I also feel that Bruce Jones played Bruce Jones in Corrie as well, aka he played himself when playing Les Battersby. I saw Bruce on CBB and he came across as shouty as Les. Sad fact is that as a child you think they are acting but as you get older you realise many actors play themselves in soaps.

I feel the ensemble cast from the 1960s to 1980s were the best and had a lot of good characters and came across likeable (despite some of their flaws). Thank goodness they aren't around now or would have been ruined. Percy Sugden was great.

Porkface could even steal the recipe and call it "Sean's Hotpot". Betty acted like she was The Don Of The Rovers by chucking people out on their ear. She acted like The Don Of Weatherfield. Yes, I remember a few years back when a barmaid named Poppy Morales became the assistant manager of the pub in Liz's absence. Betty didn't like her as Poppy called her out for being a lazy cow sitting around not doing any actual work. Poppy was then forced out of the pub after Betty walked out on the job for the thousandth time. Betty was quite vicious. Honestly, I thought "Mrs Walker" leaving Betty the pub in her will was silly, but come to think about it I think Betty paid her a visit and threatened her to leave the pub to her. Plus, Mrs Walker did suddenly disappear without a word, maybe she didn't settle down in Derby after all.

1990s Corrie was good as well as it had plenty of good replacements for Ena, Annie etc with Bet, Alec, Alf, Jack and Vera etc.
The show started to slide downhill when the Battersbollock family arrived in 1997.
The iconic scene between Bet and Rita "Better than a clapped out barmaid", if that was today's Corrie, Bet would go into The Kabin with a machine gun and blast Reet to death for refusing to go into partnership with her at The Rovers.

Corrie seems to lack in creating good new characters recently, probably because they have to always include affair storylines or murder plots when they are lacking ideas, but rarely have there been any "long term" characters creating from recent ones.
Phelan is probably one of the few good characters. It's a shame they made him a killer, as I think there is more to be done with him. I know he was a sleazy conman, but that doesn't mean he can't be a full time character (as long as Connor McIntyre is willing to carry on). Remember, some of the best characters were hardly written as nice the first time they appeared (Dennis Tanner, Ena Sharples, Ray Langton, etc).

I think common opinion is that when the Battersby family arrived that old school Corrie died.

I heard a rumour a whole back that Kate Oates was considering bringing gobby Janice back. I hope that`s just a rumour. I can`t stand Janice - never could. But with both Toyah and Leanne in Corrie, I`m thinking it`s only a matter of time before gob almighty comes back. I hope I`m wrong.
