Martha Longhurst was years and years older than Lynne Carol. In 1964 Ena said Martha was 68 when she died. Lynne was only 50. I think Martha would have lived to about 1985ish though, she'd be 90. 18 year age gap between character and actor, move over Stephanie Cole.

Another sad exit was for Minnie Caldwell, the actress had developed Alzheimers and was struggling to remember lines. Her last scene is in the Kabin talking about Easter Eggs, you can clearly see her reading the script on the counter, she even takes it with her when she leaves the shop.

Lynne Carol (Martha Longhurst) was one of my favourite characters, Lynne was sorely missed when Coronation Street made it's biggest mistake in its entire history apart from hiring the Hat, killing off this legendary character, which was idiotic, ridiculous and stupid and it robbed its audience of years of scenes in the snug with Ena, Minnie and Martha. Sadly we only had 4 years. I remember reading a story in a book by Daran Little i think and he said the cast refused to rehearse Lynne's last scenes and Peter Adamson refused to speak his lines saying Martha was dead until it was shot. Apparently years later a top executive at Granada went up to Violet Carson and said "We made a mistake getting rid of Martha." and Violet waspishly said giving him a flee in his ear "Well you should not have done it then, should you!" and walked off. From what I have read in my Corrie books a producer actually contemplated bringing Lynne Carol back to the show as a sister of Martha's, but of course this never happened. Funnily enough she was the last one of the trio to pass away in real life (she died in 1990). I wonder if she would have ever surpassed Minnie or Ena if not killed off. As C&EF said, I think she was a fair bit younger than Violet and Margot.

Rich (the latest Corrie hardman) is a top contender. Reminds me of an old personal favourite Rich Neelan. Rick the panto baddie.

Kirsty Soames...
Best ever by a country mile... Anyone who inflicts pain on Tirrone can never be anything but a legend...
Please make her return to finish the job off... And mete out some punishment on Fat Fiz while she's at it...

Alan Bradley was memorable. If only Martin Platt and Jenny arrived home a minute later, the cushion over Reets face would've done it's job. And we would've been spared her pearls of wisdom over the years. A pox on your head Martin.

Like that time when Rick Neelan (the loan shark and drug dealer) threatened to push her into the canal in order to get his drugs back from Tina. If only he went ahead with his threat, poor Dennis Tanner would probably be still here and living it up in her flat.

Ruth Walsh, an inmate and fellow prisoner of Fiz Stape in 2011. I loved it when Fiz grassed on the inmates and they rallied up to attack her. Would be great if she got released and came looking for Fiz with her gang.

You can work out from the facial expression whose daughter the actress is.

The mint imperials and toffees were bouncing off her heavily lacquered barnet like ping pong balls - and she still survived.
