Not seen the last episode of ABC murders yet. It is OK I found it a bit dark and dreary and Poirot spoke like the policeman in Allo Allo. Malkovich speaks fluent French by all accounts.

Interesting about the fluent French as Wikipedia says Malkovich is of French ancestry on his mother's side.
I have some French refugee ancestors in my blood and I learned French at school but only remember basic words.

Just watched the Torvill and Dean Drama. Excellent. My favourite drama over the Christmas holiday. The two leads were excellent and I just enjoyed everything about it.
A good start to Les Miserable tonight on BBC 1. I wanted to sing the songs from the musical in places. It has made me want to watch episode 2.

I thought it just okay. Loved Les Miserable though. As not a champion of musicals I have never seen the stage show or watched the film. Really enjoyed tonight's offering though and like you Holey I'm looking forward to the next episode. Andrew Davies is a master in his art!

Walls I bow to your superiority in TV critique! I watched the other two parts of the ABC Murders and ended up loving it. I got over my own prejudices re Poirot and thought that Malkovich put in a tour-de-force performance, as did the stocking salesman.
It might have helped that my mum had gone home so I didn't have to listen to her wittering all the way through it like I had to endure through part one!

I watched the Christmas edition of Call the Midwife and now watching re-runs. Tonight was the episode when the Thalidomide scandal broke. Heartbreaking. My father was a GP at that time. He never prescribed it because it was new and , in fact, never prescribed any tablets to pregnant women and never let me take anything either when I was pregnant. I admired him for that.

My mother went to the doctor asking for it when she was pregnant with one of my brothers, they lived in York at the time and the old Doc she saw wouldn't prescribe it, wouldn't hear of it, told her that pregnant women had to be careful what they took and he didn't trust this drug. She called him like hell until the sickness went off but obviously when the scandal broke wrote to him (they were back in Newcastle by then) to thank him for his diligence. Good job there were Docs like him and your dad Lou!

BBC 1 has a strong line up tonight New Years Day:-
7:pm Doctor Who 8:pm EastEnders 9:pm Luther 10:pm Mrs Brown's Boys
Luther looks superb from the trailers.
There is an EastEnders - Coronation Street clash at 8.
It will be interesting to see how the Coronation Street, EastEnders clash turns out. I think both will be dented, but I can see Corrie coming out on top. My prediction is :-
EE: 3.9 CS: 4.9
Emmerdale may win the night ratings wise, but it is against Doctor Who. Radio Times has Emmerdale as the soap choice of the night. It will be interesting tomorrow when the figures come out. I think Who wants to be a millionaire may be the show that suffers tonight?

I know they used to provide certain demographical families with a black box with buttons... That you had to press as people came in and out of the room to watch programmes... But do they still do it like that now or is it more up to date...?

I knew which one would be the better and I was right. Not perfect by any means with another assumed death but in drama and acting it was the better of the two.

I think it is still similar Charley, certain households have the Barb Box which mesure what they watch but they also use catch up in the figures as well. If You and Unk had watched EastEnders that would have added another 2 to the ratings.
