Not going to happen Chaz. As I said in the EE Bits & Bobs Thread it's right wing newspapers hating progress for the BBC. Viewing figures have been increasing after falling for some time and it's all down to the new EP who has put life back into the show. It's not perfect but has improved by leaps and bounds this year and the amalgamated figures prove that. Unfortunately it's the other 2 ITV Soaps who are losing viewers. I can't talk about Hollyoaks as I have no interest in it but I think if any Soap is destined to go it would be that one.

Last week ratings:-
An average of 3.51 million tuned into EastEnders Cindy and Ian’s return week. Up 6.86% yoy. (3.28m 2022). The same week Emmerdale averaged 3.98m (down from 4.25m in 2022). (Source The Darkside)
Hardly a crisis, EastEnders on BBC 2 this week due to Wimbledon. Back on BBC 1 part of next week and back to normal from the 17 July.

Although Emmerdale tend to have a strong Autumn with Anniversary week, as long as we don't have exploding cows and a stampeded again.

It was a biased, rage-bait article with the £87 million in the headline to kick off their flying monkey's with a "87 million of OUR MONEY on that crap? DEFUND THE BBC!" And of course as per the use of the word 'woke' Their favourite word to get a reaction. And it works for them! When the article first came out I had a quick look at the comments and they were nearly all condemning. Ones who admit they haven't watched for years but maintain it's gone 'woke' - how do they know? Relying on an article in an extremely right-wing paper/website which can't even be used on Wiki as it's 'truths' are 'unreliable' (to be kind ...)? 30 million to 1 million viewers. Nothing gets 30 million viewers now, habits and choices have changed but I would also guess that more people watch EE on iplayer now or catch up on a recording (like me) who wouldn't count in that 1 million watching live but are still viewing.

You can’t compare (as much as you’d want to) viewing figures from 1980s to today. The landscape of TV has changed so much. Even if you only have Freeview you’ve got at least 60 channels of watchable programming to choose from and that’s before you pay for extras like Netflix or Britbox.
Plus, Eastenders has the additional option of iPlayer and as much as I do knock the Beeb for some crazy decisioning at times, their streaming service is possibly one of the best around, especially compared to the basic bitch that is ITVX.
Plus, in the summertime viewing figures do naturally drop as people are outdoors more enjoying the few nice days before autumn lands and we have the channel upheaval to make room for 9708 hours of Wimbledon. A lot of people are just catching it on iPlayer because it’s easier right now!
The Beeb have sunk 87 million quid into a new set, now I don’t agree with that level of expenditure as I’m pretty sure ITV managed to move across the water to Salford for significantly less, but I could be wrong. But they simply aren’t going to write off a show that still gets 3 million plus per episode when they’ve committed that level of expenditure.
What the Beeb do need to look at is the roaring success STV Player have had with streaming classic Brookie from the very beginning, 13 million streams a month?! They could put classic Eastenders on iPlayer from 1985 for minimal cost and rake in viewers!

The new set looks virtually like the old 1985 set. Hard to tell the difference, although built at a different angle and hence why they have the blue building behind the car lot so as not to make viewers ask why the towerblock is no longer there.
The Emmerdale 1998-current Harewood set has many differences with Esholt. I have been to both but when I stood outside the Harewood Woolpack it did feel like I was back in Esholt. When the 1982 Corrie set was built, it did look quite different to the 1968-1982 outdoor set. Smaller viaduct, larger houses and a ginnel between the pub and No 1. And it looked too clean whereas the Grape Street set looked very real even if the houses looked small.

I’m told EE needed a new set not just for HD but because the 1985 set simply was designed to last as long as it has.
What I think is a massive shame is that none of these older “backlots” are kept and used as exhibits. People would pay a fortune to visit them!

Yes EE have done the best job recreating the old set, but I do like the Emmerdale set at Harewood which is very picturesque but bares no resemblance to the real Esholt village used from 1976-1997. However although the Corrie set is pretty dreadful it is the most iconic , (apart from the Archers) the pictures are always better on the wireless.

Haven't read the article in Private Eye, not sure if it has been posted else where, taken from a post on DS saying the BBC are considering the future of both EastEnders and Newsnight.
I am sure this won't happen with EastEnders, especially with the grotesque cost of the new set, just imagine the uproar from the right wing media/ anti BBC brigade, however I can see Newsnight going, leaving BBC2 and BBC4 to merge. I can see further budget cuts to EastEnders.
But it does beg the question does BBC 1 need EastEnders? I could see BBC 1 without a soap where as ITV 1 could not survive without their soaps.

I doubt Easties will go though, they spent too much on the new set. Neighbours was axed but returned on Amazon freevee.
