It will be a sad day when the bulldozers move in but the re-development of the area will bring exciting new changes for all... On this thread I aim to build a history of Granada TV, the Coronation Street sets and the Granada Studios Tour complex... I will also keep it updated with the re-development and the changes taking place... In five years time the area will be virtually unrecognisable... All input is greatly appreciated...
60 Never Before Seen Photos... As the curtain finally comes down on one of the most iconic features in Manchester, the owners have allowed photographer Andrew Brooks and writer Hayley Flynn on an unrestricted tour around former headquarters of Granada Television...

It's a real shame because Quay street was the oldest tv studio complex and had a lot of history, with the Bernstein brothers. (Granada has to be itv's most iconic regional company that was left) I would say TV Centre in White City was as iconic (but memories have been somewhat tarnished with what occurred with Saville and Co.) Theres only really Broadcasting house left now and thankfully the BBC use as their Headquarters and main broadcasting facility in London and it's a listed building. Some great programmes were made at Quay Street over the decades. Although Media City is spanking new and will have state of the art facilities, it's not the same. I look forward to your updates Charley, really interesting, love threads like this.

The big red Granada sign and transmitter mast on top of the building always brought a comfort of coming home after a trip away... They lit up the night sky and could be seen for miles as Manchester was pretty low rise back in the day...

I was glad to have seen much of the set from the surrounding streets. I think I did upload some pics to here, my avatar is a pic I took of where the first outdoor set was. I was in the MOSI and snapped the posh side of the street from the windows and down Water Street I stood on railings to get a good shot of the site of the first outdoor set. ukandaussiesoaps.proboards.com/thread/168/pics-corrie-locations-visiting-trip

I think it is a real shame itv has lost its regional identity, everything is so generic now and most of itv's out is from the capital. They closed tv complex's in Birmingham, Nottingham and Leeds. It is quite funny how things turned out. The BBC for many years was accused of being London biased having virtually everything coming from TVC and Lime Grove and now the BBC has more programmes coming from Salford and Media City than from Broadcasting House in London.

Thanks for the links to those photos Charley Says..., the more I look at them the more I'm seeing different things in them, absolutely fascinating. Also wondering who has walked those corridors, sat in that make-up room, sat under the hairdryers, whose dressing room that was over the years etc. What a crying shame it's all going.

Aw that's quite sad isn't it? I never did get there to have a look even though members of my family did and really enjoyed it.
I wonder what they're going to do with all those cobbles?

They were filming in there the other day... Had a catering van in the car park near the entrance gates billowing out steam...

I've just noticed the post box has gone from the corner and the paving slab filled in...

I think they've been pinching bits from the old one to use at the new one or have as spares. Its very sad, I always intended to visit last year but never got the chance, and to be honest I never thought they'd actually knock it down. I kept hoping there would be some kind of reprieve.

Is it a touch ironic that as the old set is about to be cleared for a poncey development that there is a storyline on the show about poncey developments....

When the old Central/ATV Studios were destroyed last year, a Crossroads fan was allowed onto the site to record a special Goodbye video.
Knowing ITV they'll probably get Babs Knox to warble some old tune whilst swigging from the voddy bottle?
