I think Blanche was originally about the same age as Pat Cutts (born 1925) but later sources hint the writers de aged her to January 1936. Maggie Jones was born 1934 so I guess they wanted to keep Blanche on for as long as they could, so made her nearer to Maggie's age.
Although Toke Townley was only just coming up to 60 in 1972 when he started to play Sam Pearson in Emmerdale, a character born 1896, a full 16 years older than the actor. Hence why Sam Pearson was so fit for his age and looked younger, as he was played by a much younger man. Similar to Lynne Carol born 1914 playing a character born 1896 in Corrie.
Oh yes, today would have been the birthday of Arthur Fowler, played by a man 13 years the character's senior.

Yes I’d say Blanche’s age slowly slid as time went on to being it closer to Maggie’s true age, which killed off the chances of her having had a wartime romance with Dave the Bookie but also meant she was barely 20 when she had Deirdre and meant Ken had a mother in law only a few years older than him (and in real life he’s older than Maggie!)
Looking back at the early episodes of her running the Rovers whilst the women went to Majorca and the way she bossed Billy around suggested she was a mature wise woman closer to 50 than 40 IMO.

Ena Sharples was born 70 in 1960, but later scripts mean she was just 61 at the time. If the show had stuck to its original 13 episode run, their ages would not have been altered later down the line. Elsie was de aged as was Ena and Albert, and I think Annie was slightly.

Maggie Jones was originally considered in the first place but was turned down because she was well known for another television series at the time. But I agree, Maggie Jones was the best choice.

Wow, so he was only 3 years older than William Roache? Just like Peter Adamson was only 2 years older than Roache but looked way older (and Len was meant to be older as he apparently served during World War 2).

Taking of which, Len Fairclough would have had his 98th birthday today. In 2 years time King Charles would have sent him his telegram.

I’ve always suspected some of the “resentment” between characters like Len and Alf towards the slightly younger men of the Street (particularly Ken) is that they had to fight in the War for their freedoms and here was Ken, lolling about with cash in his wallet!
Now I come to think of it, I’m struggling to recall if the subject of National Service was covered much in early episodes, although it had been stopped earlier that year, deferrals still had to be completed and some men didn’t pass out from theirs until 1963.I’m pretty certain Billy Walker undertook it but I’m not sure about Ken and Dennis.

Ken's age was fluid in the early years as well. In January 1962, he was said to be 24. That means he was born October 1937, and therefore would have done National Service. Anyone born after September 1939 did not have to qualify for it.

To think how Jack and Vera were extras for several years until 1983.
1984 was a very shaky year for the show. Jack and Vera were still finding their feet as regulars, and the loss of more originals and long standing characters, on top of the Websters trying to find their feet, and then Bill and Debbie planning to leave the area. And the return of Billy was a disaster, and the return of Linda was short lived.
