Thanks, Wendy. So sick of the thought of all this football coming up. Who cares ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ?? No, I didm;t understand the water significance either . Morven was just brilliant . They both were and the dance scene was just great . Who would have thought that Hanssen would have joined in too ? .

Telly watcher and Lou.....if this excellent episode doesn`t win anything at the next soap awards - then there really is no justice in the world.

They make 52 episodes of Holby City a year so we won't lose out. Even if it does go odd for a week (which is incredibly rare) they'll transmit 2 in a week to catch up. However, the last time I remember them doing this was May 2010 when one had to be cancelled on the night due to the forming of the coalition. Generally they just shift nights or put it out on BBC2 if a sporting event is scheduled for a Tuesday night. I think it is on Thursday next week.
Re last week's - it was superb except for a couple of niggles. I really didn't like the world and his wife crowding at the door as he died, made it seem like he was an exhibit in a zoo. Hard as it was for his friends and colleagues, they had said goodbye, their being there wasn't helping him, it should have been a private moment between him and his wife un my opinion. Speaking of whom, i'm afraid I still can't warm to her or really believe in their romance but she did act well and you have to feel sorry for somebody in that situation. "I'll walk you home, Arthur" was just beautiful.
What they've managed with Digby is a character who is pretty much universally loved by fictional characters and viewers alike - which is very rare in any show. Most characters will have lovers and haters and often the 'nice guys' are either bland and boring or they are depicted as so perfect that they come across as sanctimonious, annoying and smug so hard to care about. Arthur was a genuinely nice guy with a heart of gold who still had flaws and made mistakes which made him human.
It was great that they got Malick and Chantelle back and they both fitted back into their roles like they'd never been away.
To answer LoTty's question - the actor chose to leave and also requested that he be killed off - he was given the choice.
Although they worked in contect, i did roll my eyes slightly at the silent credits simply because we have had so many characters, many very well loved, killed off in Holby over 18 years and they've never felt it necessary to do it before. It did feel a little as though they over egged the pudding but that is probably personal to me.
Also, for me, "Locked Away" from April 2009 and "What Goes Around" from April 2010 remain better dramatically, more tear jerking episodes for me (many on DS are saying this is the best episode ever) but that doesn't lessen the quality of this.
Goodbye Digby - I'll miss you.

Kitkat...brilliant summary, and thanks for cheering me up knowing that we won`t miss out on Holby City episodes. I don`t know who Chantelle or Malick were as I`ve a relatively new viewer after years of being away.I`ve only got back into it again when Fletch left Casualty to move to Holby City. So I`ve missed out on years of viewing. To give you an idea on how long its been ...Chrissie`s Mother Diane had breast cancer the last time I watched it. What I saw of Malick on the video conference I liked. And I liked how he danced on his chair when everyone else was dancing. Who could have thought Mr Hannsen would ever have joined in the dancing. As well as making a wonderful caricature of Arthur in a General costume. The whole dancing scene was brilliant. I didn`t see a see a need of any scenes between Jac and Zosha`s oneupmanship in that episode though. It could have been done the week before. Then with Zosha breaking down and Jac comforting her, it would have made the scene so much more perfect. Of course that`s just my opinion. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

I knew I'd find this episode heartbreaking but I didn't expect to start snivelling during the staff prancing about to "Best of my Love" (even Hanssen ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) ). That was such a lovely touch and one of the best things I've seen on Holby. Then ETHAN turning up to put the cherry on the cake (he's one of my favourites). As a fellow worrier I totally got what Arthur was saying to Hanssen about feeling free, having a weight lifted off his shoulders because he didn't have to worry about anything anymore, the worst had happened I suppose. I thought the sequences when Arthur was unconscious and was seeing his friends and Morven in his head (or was it? ...) were very well played. So emotional but what a treat for the viewers to see what HE was seeing. @wendy, perhaps the water was supposed to represent his fear but when Morven finally turned up he felt safe, like he was on dry land? Morven is growing on me, I was starting to believe in her and Digby more by the end. I really liked her at Arthur's deathbed, the actress was excellent. How good was it to see Malick and Chantelle back? Morven said "You gave a bit of yourself to all of us Arthur Digby" He did, a character I really liked and am sorry has gone with no chance of coming back. Thanks KK for answering my question, I'm glad that it was the actor who chose to go and he wasn't written out. How brave of him to go out into the yonder without a safety net! I wish him all the best for the future and thank him for his marvellous portray of Dr Arthur Digby. I agree with KK, the staff shouldn't have been standing like that like hawks at the door watching his last breaths, I think in the real world people would have had more sensitivity and left him and Morven alone, Coming in once they heard the flatline but let Morven have that moment. Dom could have possibly been there as they were soulmates too but the rest, no. Zosia and Jac - perfect. Superb episode.

I agree with Lotty about jac and Zosia - that was perfection. Maybe for most of the episode it felt out of place, them 'squabbling' detracting from the 'meat' of the episode (Digby's death) but the pay off (one i suspect will continuE form months, if not years if Zosia stays that long) is that Zosia's inability to deal with the emotional side of her friendships/relationships and avoidance tactics by concentrating on work and assuaging her gulit by "I did my best for him" meant she missed his final hours/minutes.
Now we saw inside Digby's head, we saw that Zosia was there for him at the end, that he felt she was one of his 'guardians' to lead him through, but Zosia will never know that. She will probably hate herself for being aa coward and not being there for him even though she had the chance, just as she hates herself for not being there for her mother as she died, when she didn't have the chance.
Jac understands self hatred, avoidance, guilt, hurting those around you, concentrating on work as it is "easier to fix other people" (Jac's reason for becoming a doctor when asked by Valentine 2009) and can see herself in Zosia (said so a few months ago) which is why she was constantly goading Zosia through the episode to try and get her to admit what she was doing (avoidance) and say "I shouldn't be in this operation, I should be with my friend" and she didn't - hence Jac losing her temper and hitting the table. Then, at the end, when Zosia was told Arthur had died and broke down in such a raw way, Jac was there as she knew that is what she'd be like if it was somebody she loved like Sacha, Jonny, Elliot, Joseph.
There is a lot of transference and projection going on in the Zosia/jkac dynamic. They admire and hate aspects of the other as they recognise themselves in the other. That was what Zosia's rant about "how did you get so cold, so alone" to Jac was about. She's scared it will happen to her. And Jac let it go because she understood that.
None of that would have worked in a different episode, it had to be the same day as Arthur died.

If those people that had several years of not watching need me to catch them up, especially about Jac, just shout. She is a fascinating character and you've really not seen the best of her, and won't appreciate why she does much of what she does, why she is as she is, without knowing what has happened to her.

Just watched it tonight. I was a complete wreck afterwards. It was so perfect from start to finish. Having the Scandinavian stick insect dancing in that segment was inspired. Nice to see Nibbles from Casualty make an appearance, keeping up the pretence it is the same hospital. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) The ending was great Zosia and Jac and having no theme music at the end with a black screen was perfect and thank goodness no continuity announcer ruined it at the end. I agree with you Wendy If there is any justice all the awards will be going Holby's way. How sad no more Diggers. ![:'(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cry.png) Comparing Casualty and Holby this week you realise there is a huge chasm between the two.

Lou....I just checked the Radio Times online schedule, and it seems that stupid football is on next week and the week after. But I see that EastEnders is still on. heaven forbid they should tick off the EE fans. They have no problem with ticking off the Casualty, Holby City, and Doctors fans though. smiley-angry www.radiotimes.com/tv/tv-listings?sd=14-06-2016%2020:00Now Now. m0918

Haven't seen this weeks properly late so can't comment on it.
To give some background on Malick and Chantelle as Wendy mentioned not having seen them before.
Malick was a Registrar when he joined in Jan 2011, on hos last chance after having hit his Consultant on a different ward after an offensive comment. He was very 'in your face', arrogant, proud of being black and gay (sometime overly sensitive re possible discrimination) and quite aggressive. For all that, he was distinctly likeable. He mellowed a little in time, becoming one of the few people to know that Oliver swapped his final exam paper with his sister so was not actually qualified as a Doctor (Oliver confessed this after Ponny was killed - Hansenn also knows but adopted the attitude that Oliver had performed the procedures covered in the exam successfully since so it doesn't matter which is a bit wtf) and also became chief tutor to the newly qualified Doctors - hence him being so close to Digby as he trained him for his first year. He left because he was involved in a serious road accident, caused by Digby taking his eye off the road as he was confessing his love for Chantelle and lost his hand as Digby pulled him from the wreckage. It was reattached but meant he could no longer be a surgeon (having just made Consultant) so he was offered a job in Sweden by Hansenn, who had also left after being involved in the same caar accident. Malick also had a ONS with Dominic when he was having relationship problems with Nathan (who is now his husband) and Dom reacted badly when Malick said it was a one off, stating that Malick had seduced him when he was a student and Malick the tutor and also that Malick had gone against a DNR in a case that the GMC were investigating. Digby's evidence cleared Malick and got dom put back a year in his studies, hence Digby and Dom being enemies for quite a long time before they bonded and became close friends.
Chantelle was a newly qualified Nurse who was in from mid 2011 until she also left following the car accident which she was seriously injured in, although she fully recovered after a couple of months. She was naive, ditzy, maybe a little stupid sometimes and should, on paper, have been annoying but was actually charming, mainly due to an engaging performance by the actress. Chantelle is probably the most good hearted and genuinely kind and cheerful character ever to have appeared in Holby City. She nearly always had a smile on her face which could light up a city, the few times she didn't because somebody had hurt her, it was like watching a puppy being kicked - truly upsetting.
Arthur fell in love with her pretty much at first sight and they had great chemistry but she never fully returned his affections (although she cared deeply for him as a friend) which is another reason she left as she felt it was hurting him her being around.
Hope that helps.

I feel a bit like Serena, can't believe that Arthur Digby is gone either. Part of me wanted to slap Dom but mostly I just wanted to take him in my arms and hug him even though he'd have bitten my head off for doing it! His speech though ![:'(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cry.png) I was in a puddle yet again. Loved seeing Ethan again, almost made up for Casualty not being on tonight. Poor Zosia, she doesn't know what to do does she? I'm glad after the disaster of the funeral we got to see the wake. I think I'm falling in love with Hanssen lol! He's soooo cool.

Oh I've long been a little bit in love with Hansenn. Not to the extent i was with Anton Meyer (or Joseph or Jonny but they were in slightly different ways) but Hansenn is way up there.
