Vintage TV was anything pre Cowellisation of TV.

Is that a Studio Ghibli avatar I take it? It is I've been rewatching their movies on Film4 over the last few weeks, so I got a bit inspired. I have a couple on DVD but have not seen that many of them.

Anyone remember "Armchair Thriller" back in the late 70s, possibly 1978?
That used to scare the bejesus out of me, especially the one with the Nun with no face. I was too scared to sleep with the light off that night! Can't believe my parents let me watch that at 9 or 10 years of age.
Even the music on the opening credits used to put the willies up me.

Or have i dreamt that one up myself, kind of a mix up of MASH and Turn of the Screw. Tales of the Incredibly Obvious did have some fun ones as well. Parents were much less strict in the 70s about tv viewing. It's why i have no time for the "my 7 year old was traumsatised by an inferred attack shown at 8.30) brigade.

Tales of the unexpected is a bit before my time but it is one of the inspirations for Inside No 9 which is a bit hit and miss. Haven't watched the third EP of series 2 yet.

Tales was fine for it's first couple of seasons but like most of these things it went on too long and people got a 'feel' for the style of the show. The twists became easier to spot once you'd got used to the structure of the show and we're looking out for any clues.
I'm constantly amazed when people go on about 'tsits' shocking them in films because i invariably guess them early on. I asked if Bruce Willis was dead for the rest of the film as soon as he was shot in the opening scene of the Sixth Sense and couldn't believe something that obvious was the selling pint of the film!
I have often wondered if it is just because i grew up watching things like 'Tales' and 'Armchair theatre' though so got used to them.

Later used as the theme to Topranko! a channel 5 quiz that was a bit like Pointless and hosted by the great Anthony H Wilson, riding on the back of his revival thanks to 24 Hour Party People, and Charlotte Hudson

*Hesitantly starts a topic thread* I just thought this might be a good place to discuss vintage tele we like Are there any DVDs/boxsets you never tire of? Do you wish they'd repeat something? Are there any good repeats of old shows you're currently avoiding 'new' tele to watch? Do you get your sitcom fix thanks to the BBC2 afternoon schedule? Is new Poldark better than old Poldark? Chat about it and more here! Great thread Apart from ED and Corrie, I rarely watch anything 'new', with because it's either dumbed down health and safety PC bollocks or made out of that awful CGI crap which I can't stand! I miss the old gameshows, Catchphrase, Gladiators, Price is Right, Play Your Cards Right, Supermarket Sweep, Win Lose or Draw etc. I also wish instead of trying (and failing miserably) to remake something, they'd just put on repeats of the originals, so instead of the new Thunderbirds rubbish, they'd simply have shown the proper one instead. I miss the days of three or four channels, a Looney Tunes or Tom & Jerry cartoon on a Saturday and Sunday afternoon, and no bloody singing/dancing/anything-ing trashy talent/reality shows . Two shows I would like to see repeated are The Phoenix and the Carpet and The Magician's House (anybody remember them?) I watch a lot of old stuff on YouTube and online as it's not available to buy, but as to actual DVD's, my ultimate watch is Buffy, which I watch on loop one season after the other, and could do so until the end of time , all 80 of the original Midsomer Murders, Life On Mars, Ashes to Ashes, Fawlty Towers and the first two seasons of the new Doctor Who. Other stuff too, but their the main ones. What about shows that got cancelled or axed that you wish you could have seen more of? Mine would be The Chase (not the gameshow, the bbc show set in a vets with Megan off ED) and Ringer. Really wish that had hadn't been cancelled .

OMG yes! I was a bit older than you but I still had bloody nightmares That was a scary bloomin' programme. I think parents were more open to letting their kids watch stuff in those days though. I remember in early days of comp (must have been 11-12) and the original Bouquet of Barbed Wire was on telly on a friday night choc-a-block of nudity, sex and even a dad who seemed to be lusting after his daughter (well that's how I remember it!) But nearly all us had watched it and couldn't wait to get back to school on the Monday morning to dissect it in detail My mum says she let me watch it thinking I might learn something (?) but nowadays it would be "get this filth off our screens, THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!!"

We're on the same page again KitKat! I hadn't read any further than UQ's post when I quoted it and made my comments about parents back then only to go back and finish reading the thread to find that you'd put something similar first
